Revenant Season 1 Episode 5 Recap
In Episode 5 of “Revenant,” Yeom Hae-Sang (Oh Jung-se) and Gu San-Yeong (Kim Tae-ri) visit the village where a ritual took place to ward off evil spirits. When they learn that the dolls used in the ritual have been burned, Hae-Sang searches for another way to deal with the stray ghosts. As a stopgap, he plays a video of the ritual on the public speakers. While this is going on, San-Yeong runs into a lot of ghosts and comes face to face with her father after spotting him in a store window. Hae-Sang starts to chop down a piece of wood bark known as Jangseung which is thought to keep evil spirits away from the hamlet. San-Yeong’s father, Gang-Mo, informs her that it wasn’t him and apologizes before vanishing as the spirits begin to fade away. San-Yeong collapses and awakens at a medical facility.
Finally disclosing the reason behind her years-long exile from Gang-Mo is San-Yeong’s mother. She explains that because Gang-Mo insisted their second child must die, she was forced to flee the house and find safety in Baekchagol, where her mother informed her that Gang-Mo was present that evening. San-Yeong’s mother brought her to Seoul out of concern for her daughter’s safety and has never mentioned that period of time again. She had been informed by Gang-Mo that during calamities, the second kid in the village of Jangjin-ri always perished as part of a protective ritual.
When Hae-Sang returns to the village and looks into San-Yeong’s grandmother’s house, he discovers a message saying that only the energy of a deceased spirit can expel the loose-haired ghost occupying San-Yeong. Detectives identify Gang-Mo as the missing link after discovering a connection between him and a number of suicides. When Hae-Sang finds out that Gang-Mo committed suicide, he realizes that the loose-haired spirit was the one who persuaded him to give the red hair item to San-Yeong.
San-Yeong is certain that Mok-Dan’s spirit is in possession of her, but it’s unclear what the spirit wants. She dons a new look and shows up for a wedding reception party acting in an erratic and provocative manner. Detective Lee Hong-Sae (Hong Kyung) is horrified when San-Yeong claims to have killed individuals, while Se-Mi is perplexed and concerned by San-Yeong’s actions. When San-Yeong finally regains control, she wants to flee after discovering how drastically her appearance and conduct have changed.
The episode ends with San-Yeong shouting for things to stop while standing on a bridge after the spirit’s voice informs her that she is merely carrying out San-Yeong’s wishes. Hae-Sang, meanwhile, finds a relic his mother hid decades earlier, maybe providing a solution to save San-Yeong. The effort to rescue San-Yeong from the spirit’s control escalates in the upcoming episode, which promises more information about Mok-Dan.
