Is The Stranger [Netflix] based on a true story?
The premise, which is based on the true account of one of the biggest investigations and covert operations in Australia, revolves around their tense friendship. Wright was motivated by the true hunt for the killer of 13-year-old Daniel Morcombe, whose family has spoken out against the movie. But neither the boy nor the crime is shown, nor is Morcombe given a name. It’s unlikely that audiences who entered the movie unprepared would make any connections to actual events.
The difference in The Stranger is that Mark’s distress about his writing appears startlingly genuine, and this infuses everything with compelling psychological intensity. It’s challenging to execute a successful dream scene, but Wright, who excels at making characters feel trapped inside themselves, directs several of them, fusing the inner and outer worlds and luring the audience deeper into Mark’s mind. Wright uses cinematic emotion in his aesthetic flourishes without taking us out of the scene’s reality.
The parents of murdered Queensland 13-year-old schoolboy Daniel Morcombe have criticized the producers of a new Australian film, saying it is “making money off a heinous crime” and is “disrespectful” to their son. Bruce and Denise Morcombe reject the idea the film is fictitious and say is it ‘extremely distressing’
Daniel Morcombe disappeared while waiting for a bus at Woombye in 2003. The producers of the film said it was “a fictionalized account of the undercover police operation that resulted in a successful murder prosecution”. Daniel’s mother Denise yesterday tweeted that the film “is not supported by the Morcombe family.” “The actor, the cameraman — they’ve all made money out of the movie but the hurtful thing is, they are using Daniel’s name to promote the movie and that’s what we find really disgusting,” Ms. Morcombe told ABC.
Daniel and their family do ‘not want this story, their parents say. The Morcombes rejected the notion that the film was fictitious. “The actual predator looks exactly like Brett Peter Cowan,” Ms. Morcombe said.
The film’s producers defended the production, saying “out of our deepest respect for the family, the name of the victim is never mentioned in the film”. “The film does not depict any details of the murder, nor is the family represented in the film in any way,” the producers said. “Instead it tells the story of the unknown police professionals who committed years of their lives and their mental and physical health to resolve this case and others like it.
“When the film was first in development, the producers approached the family to make them aware of the film — they declined to be involved. It is a decision we continue to respect.”
A MIFF spokesperson said it “respects and acknowledges the grief, pain and hurt that the Morcombe family have expressed about this film” but stood by its decision to screen it.
