Succession Season 4 Episode 2, Alan Ruck‘s Connor and Justine Lupe‘s Willa are getting married the next day, and the title alludes to the wedding rehearsal dinner they’ll be attending the night before the ceremony. When it comes to showing their support for Connor on his Wedding Eve, Shiv (Sarah Snook), Kendall (Jeremy Strong), and Roman (Kieran Culkin) are too preoccupied with their own antics and never-ending quest to win a round with their father. Even if Willa is a fugitive bride and Connor just wants to sing karaoke, the conversation likely revolves around Sandy, and Stewie (Arian Moayed’) whose chemistry with Kendall, comparisons, and the future plans of everyone involved. The fragile alliance between Kendall, Shiv, and Roman first begins to show signs of cracking in “Rehearsal.” While Shiv and Roman are celebrating their father’s birthday in secret, Kendall sneaks off to take a call with Alexander Skarsgrd’s Lukas Matsson, before turning around and joining forces with Shiv to try to control Roman for conversing with their dad behind their backs. Shiv and her brothers are at the Kendall, Roman HQ griping about the content on PGN. They clearly didn’t do their research before purchasing, which fits the brand perfectly. She gets a bad call while she’s being roasted on cable news. Her first choice in divorce attorneys is unable to take her case. That attorney has a “conflict of interest” because he or she met with Tom to discuss representing him. She shrugs it off but then finds out that her backup plan also talked to Tom. Her third did, too, and the ones after that.
It turns out Logan did the same thing to Shiv’s mom, so Shiv is convinced Logan is responsible. Suddenly enraged, Shiv calls Sandy to vent his frustrations about how she’s been pressuring his siblings to vote against the GoJo sale so that Logan can get a bigger payout. The siblings had shown no interest because they are eager to cash out once they have amassed enough wealth to buy Pierce and because they cannot risk losing the capital they will need to do so by selling their Waystar shares. Now that Shiv has forgiven Logan, she is considering taking the deal as a means of getting back at him and possibly covering up what she suspects is an inflated price they paid for Pierce. In the meantime, Tom and Greg are dealing with Logan’s decision to devote more time to ATN, and a subplot involving Logan’s assistant, Kerry (Zoe Winters), being offered a hosting job. These executives are experts at shifting the blame, and Greg ends up being the one to break the news that Kerry will not be promoted.
Meanwhile, Logan’s restlessness stems from his inability to abuse his children, so he visits the ATN newsroom, the only part of his kingdom where people still fear him. There, Logan begins pacing, which Greg describes over the phone to Tom as “terrifyingly moseying,” before delivering an angry speech to the ATN staff, complete with his trademark mixture of mordanting humiliation because he needs a task to complete. He also discusses a new wrinkle with Tom while he’s there: Kerry has sent in an audition tape because she desires to be an anchor. At first glance, it appears that Logan may be interested in Tom hiring her. Now it’s clear that Logan has told Tom to reject her because he knows how terrible she is. Tom, being Tom, does the most cowardly thing he could think of and starts kicking it to Greg. Greg tries to ignore Kerry’s disdainful gaze, but Kerry is well aware of the Roy family’s unspoken taboo against hearing bad news from anyone other than Greg.
Shiv begins influencing her bros on Sandy’s plan to tank the sale without letting on that she is upset with Logan. Roman has no desire to continue fighting his father, so he isn’t interested. Kendall is uninterested because he believes Matsson will simply walk away, at which point there will be no further financial gain. But things get more complicated when Logan cancels the siblings’ use of the Waystar chopper for their planned trip to Connor’s rehearsal dinner. They drive to get there.
The argumentativeness is temporarily put on hold as the four siblings head to a karaoke bar, where Connor chooses to perform Leonard Cohen’s “Famous Blue Raincoat.” However, the negotiations proceed even in the karaoke room. Roman is not interested in helping Kendall and Shiv plot against Sandy and Stewy. And neither does Connor, who’s not a board member but still can’t believe his sibling’s plan to steal from him. In addition, Connor is so enraged that he sends Logan a warning via text message. For crying out loud, this is how Logan Roy ends up at a karaoke bar pleading with his children to get along.
Logan takes an unexpected tack and is nice to everyone. He assures them that if they vote no, the agreement will be dead because there is no more money to be squeezed out of them. However, he makes an attempt at a more personal appeal because his children do, in fact, have emotions. When asked about the helicopter, he says he’s sorry and… In any case, that’s all there is to it. When Shiv questions Logan about the divorce advice he gave Tom, Logan shrugs and says he would have given the same counsel to her.
Unfortunately, we don’t get to find out which songs the other siblings would have picked, but it’s safe to assume that Ken would have thrown himself into a performance of “Big Poppa,” and the outcomes would have been extremely offensive. Logan unexpectedly shows up at the party and apologizes to his kids in the vaguest, most nebulous terms imaginable. Connor buys his father some time by forgiving him, but his three younger siblings have already exhausted their capacity for mercy. This is the sequence where we finally learn the full extent of the traumas that have been hinted at throughout the series, such as Roman’s childhood abuse, Logan’s imprisonment of Connor’s mother, and the exploding betrayal at the conclusion of Season 3. After Logan’s attempt to get everyone on the same page before such a board meeting falls flat, Kendall congratulates Kerry on her first major treachery from Logan, and Logan storms out of the office in a huff.

The writers of this show, which features mostly despicable characters, deserve praise for the depth and complexity they bring to even the most one-dimensional of them. Aside from Connor’s revelation at the end of the episode, seeing Kerry’s disappointment and Shiv and Tom’s divorce conversation also fall into this category. His family’s inability to put aside their disagreements even the night before his wedding disappoints him, but he has come to terms with it. The episode culminates in the ultimate act of betrayal, however, when Roman comes crawling back to Logan. Every time he enters the room, you can almost feel his uncertainty, and Kieran Culkin’s performance is as nuanced as ever. Despite his father’s warm welcome, he reacts to Logan’s words with a grimace, as if he were being struck. The episode ends with Logan saying, “I need you,” and that’s all the audience desires to know about which way Roman’s alliances will turn.
Given that many viewers were unhappy with the lack of development during the previous season of Roy’s family drama Succession, it is remarkable how much has already happened in just the first two episodes of this year’s show. Connor’s wedding is coming up. In order to meet with Matsson, Logan is traveling to Europe. Kendall and Shiv are prepared to finalize the transaction. The youngsters have made a pact to acquire Pierce. Tom and Shiv are at loggerheads. To become king of ATN, Roman is considering abandoning his brother and sister and returning to his father’s side. Kerry is unhappy with how her life has turned out so far. Greg is getting a better sense of style, cutting his hair shorter, and exploring the potential benefits and dangers of working closely with powerful people alongside Tom. You cannot claim that nothing is taking place.
