The Bear Season 2 Episode 1 Recap: Beef

The episode starts with the group discussing the costs of the remodel, as they need to navigate Chicago’s red tape and permits. They are also coping with financial difficulties, such as an odd IRS requirement that debts be settled before beginning any new businesses. Despite having $300,000 saved by Uncle Jimmy, the gang’s financial situation remains shaky.

In the meantime, Richie is depressed and contemplating suicide in the basement. He confides his worries in Carmy ( Jeremy Allen White) and expresses his worry that one day the group may desert him. They discuss what makes them happy and how unhappy they are with their jobs at the Beef.

Sydney and Tina (Liza Colón-Zayas) talk about their new restaurant’s need for new pans. Sydney brings up the cleaning product Bar Keepers Friend and how effective it is. It is later discovered that this product was used to clean some of the pans.

In order to raise money for their new project, the group decides to enlist the dubious Uncle Jimmy Cicero (Oliver Platt). When they reveal Michael “Mikey” Berzatto’s secret money cans, Carmy pledges to pay Jimmy off entirely within the next 18 months. They will give him the structure and the land if he is still not healed by then. When Jimmy accepts the deal, the gang starts to work more closely with him.

The restaurant won’t start making money for at least eight months, according to Carmy, Sugar, and Sydney. Sydney is entrusted with working to get the Bear a Michelin star. At the hospital, Marcus sees someone important to him being treated as the episode comes to a close. The audience is left wondering while the situation’s specifics and seriousness are kept a secret.

Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) reading a book about a guy who likes to watch trains and the mention of a character named Uncle Lee Lane, who might be played by Bob Odenkirk later in the season, are just a few of the character moments and interactions that give away upcoming storylines and developments throughout the episode. Tina accepts Sydney’s request to train as her sous-chef with pleasure.
