The third season of THE BEAR picks up where the second season left off, with a lot of tension. In the premiere, we were taken on a journey through Carmy’s past and saw the moments that made him who he is today. The second episode is called “Next,” and it was directed by Christopher Storer and written by Christopher and Courtney Storer. At the restaurant, the team faces new problems. This episode goes into great detail about how Carmy leads and the stresses that come with wanting to be the best.
THE BEAR SEASON 3 EPISODE 2 RECAP: “NEXT”
The episode starts at Sydney’s apartment with a normal dad-daughter fight over bathroom time, which sets a fun tone. Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) gets ready for the day and goes to The Bear. Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) is already busy with his work at the restaurant when his sister Natalie shows up. Natalie talks about how happy and nervous she is about becoming a mom in two months. She wishes she could solve her problems from the past before the baby comes. She sees Carmy’s list of must-haves, which he says are rules that all the best places follow. He tells her to make copies for the staff, which means that rules will be very strict from now on.
When Cicero shows up out of the blue, he causes stress by warning Carmy not to spend too much on kitchen upgrades, which hints at money problems. When Sydney gets there, she is shocked to see that Carmy has already made a few dishes as part of their research and development. It’s clear that Carmy wants to get a Michelin star, but Sydney is worried about his plan to change the menu every day. She worries about whether such high standards are realistic and about whether Carmy’s drive is making him lose sight of what’s important.
Carmy gives Sydney a DocuSign email for a partnership deal that spells out how much of the restaurant she will own. Sydney is confused and overwhelmed by all the information. She asks Natalie if she should talk to a lawyer, which Natalie agrees with. At the same time, the problem between Carmy and Richie played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach has not been fixed. Even though Carmy tries to apologize through voicemail, Richie won’t accept it. This starts a heated fight that Sydney has to break up.
There are some things on Richie’s list that he doesn’t agree with, and he thinks they are silly and pointless. Carmy is adamant that they must follow these rules in order to get their Michelin star. Sydney already feels stressed out because of the restaurant’s new direction, and the argument makes her feel even worse. As the rest of the team, including the Faks and Tina, shows up, the list of things that can’t be changed becomes the main topic of conversation. Tina is happy that she is now in charge of the farmer’s market, but some people, like Neil, are scared of the idea of a menu that changes every day.
When Richie brings up Claire (Molly Gordon), which could mean that there are unresolved personal problems, the conflict heats up. The staff is most interested in Carmy’s friendship with Claire when Cicero and Sydney also ask about it. Carmy reluctantly tells everyone that he thought his relationship with Claire was a waste of time, which made everyone sad. Richie and Carmy’s ongoing fight gets in the way of work, so Natalie steps in to help.
To make things even worse, Carmy finds out that several waiters have quit because the kitchen isn’t working well. Marcus shows up in the middle of all this chaos. He is looking for comfort in his work after his mother died. He quietly agrees to the list of things that can’t be changed and gets to work on the jobs that Sydney and Carmy have given him. Carmy comforts Marcus in a private talk. Marcus sees the death of his mother while he was at The Bear as a sign that the restaurant might do well. Their words show how important the feelings are for everyone concerned.
At the end of the episode, Sydney thinks about Carmy’s new dishes and the changes and difficulties that lie ahead. It looks like getting a Michelin star will be a long, hard road full of problems and emotional struggles. The third season of THE BEAR is now available on Hulu.
