Where Was The Duel Movie Filmed?

“The Duel” is set in California and Mexico, but the entire film was shot in Indiana (Hoosier State), which presented unusual challenges for the production team. The team had to get creative to make Indiana locations look like California beaches and Mexican landscapes during late summer 2020 filming. when the COVID-19 pandemic was making things very difficult. Several real locations were used as backdrops in this modern tale about two friends who are at odds with each other. Here are some of the most important places where the movie was shot:

Indiana City, Indianapolis

Midland Art and Antiques: This unusual market was a big component of the film and gave several scenes a lovely backdrop. An Indianapolis tiki bar, The Inferno Room presented a unique scene that matched the vibrant atmosphere of the film.

Lake Michigan, Michigan City

For “THE DUEL,” Lake Michigan in Michigan City, Indiana, was used to film scenes that needed a coastal setting. The filmmakers chose this location because its wide, open water looked like a beach in California.

Asherwood Estate in Carmel

The former Mel and Bren Simon estate, Asherwood, in Carmel, Indiana, was a major filming location for “THE DUEL.” This lavish estate hosted much of the film’s action. Its beautiful architecture and gardens made the estate a perfect California and Mexico model. Asherwood shows how the filmmakers took local Indiana locations and made them work for the film.

Bedford and Bluespring Caverns

In “THE DUEL,” Bedford and Bluespring Caverns in Indiana were filmed. These places gave the film unique and interesting settings. Bluespring Caverns, known for its underground river and limestone formations, added an exciting and adventurous backdrop to some scenes.

Franklin College, Franklin, Indiana

One of the sites for “THE DUEL” filming was Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana. The campus of the college offered a fantastic backdrop for several movie sequences. Franklin College was used as a substitute site when production couldn’t make it back to the Asherwood estate for some reshoots. A unique touch was added to the film by local students and staff from the college. The movie was made using local talent and resources.

City Market Catacombs, Indianapolis

Some scenes of “THE DUEL” were filmed at Indianapolis’ City Market Catacombs. The historic catacombs under City Market gave the movie’s setting a unique feel by adding a sense of history and mystery.

Indiana-based Pigasus Pictures, known for indie film, produced “The Duel”. The film, the company’s seventh, is its most ambitious. The cast, including Dylan Sprouse and Callan McAuliffe, praised Indiana’s hospitality and support during filming. Zach Spicer, Pigasus Pictures co-owner and Franklin College professor, said they had to find Indiana locations that fit these roles. Michigan City’s Lake Michigan shores replaced California beaches, and Bedford’s Bluespring Caverns and Indianapolis’ City Market Catacombs were used for other scenes. The luxurious Asherwood Estate in Carmel was also used. Spicer said they worked quickly and creatively to find these locations despite a tight schedule.

In “THE DUEL,” California locations are seen in different circumstances. Urban scenes were shot in Los Angeles, while Pasadena Princess was a picturesque location. San Diego’s coastal views represented seaside locations, and Johnson Valley’s rugged terrain represented deserts. Although mostly shot in Indiana, these California locations helped create the film’s diverse and dynamic settings.
