But when Captain Watkins believes Dante is involved in a case she had given to someone else, his career takes a turn for the worse. Dante is shocked to be offered a job promotion with better hours and compensation, based in California, despite his concerns of being fired. The caveat is that he’ll be stuck behind a desk for the remainder of his career unless he accepts the new position. Dante is presented with a tough choice that would force him to leave his life in New York behind after talking about the offer with Robyn, who urges him to accept it.
In the meantime, Billal Malik and his brother Imran kidnap Mel (Liza Lapira) in order to exact revenge on them for the murder of their father, Farhan Malik, a terrorist who was slain by Americans. In an attempt to delay them, Mel offers to assist in locating their father’s body, giving Harry and the group more time to locate her and bring her to safety.
Harry senses that something is off when he discovers Mel’s phone abandoned in some bushes and grows suspicious. He locates the man who answered the phone using his AI, and this leads him to the warehouse where Mel is being held.
Harry organizes the crew to help him plot Mel’s rescue. He approaches Billal and Imran and informs them that their father, Farhan Malik, who they had thought to be dead, is in fact still alive but has assumed a different name. Harry is able to surprise the brothers and save Mel before they have a chance to hurt her more because of this revelation, which creates a brief distraction.
Mel is forced to face her PTSD as a result of the difficult circumstance, and she ultimately decides to stop helping with “Equalizing” efforts in order to concentrate on her recovery. Dee also makes the decision to forgo military school in order to continue serving others at her current school, demonstrating her dedication to improving her community.
Robyn eventually admits her affections to Dante at the end of the episode. Dante has already accepted the task force position and is getting set to leave the city to go after a child predator ring. The dynamics of the squad and Dante’s destiny are left unclear in the season finale, laying the groundwork for possible events in the following one.
