The Essex Serpent Season 1 Episode 5 Recap
The townspeople look for Naomi, while the Ransome family prepares to leave for London. Stella is in desperate need of a diagnosis since she is coughing up blood. After the fallout from her birthday celebration, Cora is sulking in bed. With the mention of the fossil discoveries, Martha manages to pique her attention. When she presents her find to the archaeological society, they request more specimens. Cora vents her emotions on Martha, the servant, and the two fightings. Stella travels to London to see Luke (Frank Dillane ) and is diagnosed with tuberculosis. She declines extreme treatment and lets Will take the kids to the National History Museum before returning home. Will had an unsettling encounter with Cora at the museum. She is still heartbroken and weeps at home. She tries to make apologies to Martha by taking her to the slums in the hopes of persuading Charles Ambrose to make a social shift in government.
Luke is horrified by the living conditions in the slums, claiming that there is toxic gas in the air, vermin on the ground, and disease all around them. Martha persuades Charles, who says he’ll bring the matter up in Parliament. At a special gathering in Luke’s honour, Cora shows her support. Luke proposes to her after they become intoxicated. Luke develops a cruel streak after she laughs it off. The doctor brings up her feelings for Will as well as Stella’s illness. Cora is angry and argues again, but this time she is the one who storms off. At home, she smashes her late husband’s vase and then goes to town on the house, pulling fabric from the walls and destroying mirrors. In the meantime, Luke is stabbed in the operating hand by a thief. Will constructs a fire and speaks to it, confessing his crimes and abandoning God. Cora should be returned to him, he wishes. Clearly, the vicar is losing faith, as well as his grasp on reality.
