In The Handmaid’s Tale, Janine Lindo, played by Madeline Brewer, has been through one of the most difficult and emotional journeys. She was found to be alive in season 6 but locked up in a terrible place called Jezebel’s, a brothel where former Handmaids are forced to work as prostitutes. This came after she left Commander Lawrence’s (played by Bradley Whitford) home.
Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), who has always had a complicated relationship with Janine, was shocked to find her in Jezebel’s. She immediately promised to get her out, hoping to offer her a better future. She told Aunt Lydia she was “delusional” to think that Gilead would ever let women like them live freely.
Janine had doubts, but her real wish was simple: she just wanted to see her daughter Angela again. Angela had been taken from her and was now living in New Bethlehem with the Lawrence family. But that hope was crushed when Commander Lawrence told Janine that his new wife, Naomi Putnam (played by Ever Carradine), was a strict and traditional Gilead wife. Naomi would never accept Janine back into their home.
As if things couldn’t get worse, Janine became the focus of unwanted attention from Commander Bell, played by Timothy Simons. His obsession with her put Janine in a very dangerous position. In Gilead, defying a Commander can have fatal consequences, especially when that Commander sees you as property.
Fans are deeply concerned for Janine, especially since her storyline goes far beyond what was written in the original Handmaid’s Tale novel by Margaret Atwood. Starting from season 2, the Hulu series has moved past the book’s material and created original arcs for many characters—including Janine.

Is Janine Lindo In The Testaments Sequel To The Handmaid’s Tale?
Some viewers hoped that Janine’s story might continue in The Testaments, the sequel novel also written by Atwood. But unfortunately, Janine does not appear in that book. Actress Madeline Brewer has confirmed that she will not be part of the upcoming TV adaptation of The Testaments.
In an interview, Brewer said she’s happy to see her co-star Ann Dowd continue in the role of Aunt Lydia. She also expressed excitement for the new cast joining The Testaments series, calling it a great opportunity for emerging talent.
This revelation suggests that Janine’s storyline is likely to end in The Handmaid’s Tale final season. Whether she finds peace, freedom, or tragedy remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, The Testaments will shift the focus to other key characters. June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss), Nick Blaine (Max Minghella), and Luke Bankole (O-T Fagbenle) will return in the sequel. Hannah Bankole (Jordana Blake), June’s daughter, is also expected to play a major role as the story picks up five years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale.
As the series wraps up, fans continue to hope that Janine—who has suffered so much—will finally find some form of justice or closure.
