The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Episode 5 Recap
June answers an important call in the wee hours. She is Lily. A parent arrives with important information. So Moira and Luke accompany her, and the three of them set off. It appears that the border police have become more vigilant, leaving the friendly trapped in No Man’s Land. Luke is forced to go himself in order to learn more about Hannah. June chooses to accompany him. Given that they still need someone to take care of Nichole, Moira is most definitely not. Given that it would be risky to reveal the identity of the person they are meeting, they are given a code word and instructions before returning to Gilead. Naturally, this makes them think of the agonizing moment when Hannah’s arms were torn off all those years ago. June continues regardless as she does so. Serena is still taking advantage of the Wheeler’s generosity while doing so clumsily.
Another delicious breakfast is prepared for her by them. Serena intends to construct a second facility. Warren and Joseph both call Serena, with Warren upset about the negative news she has received since the center was closed. Serena has opinions on it and thinks it’s incorrect to concentrate on Gilead. Instead, they ought to concentrate on conception and births. Warren eventually hangs up on her after becoming frustrated. Warren does not want Gilead to be accessible to the outside world, but Lawrence is quick to point out that their country will perish if they don’t at least let a glimpse through their doors. When June and Luke finally make contact, he encourages them to join him. Even though June and Luke are reasonably wary, they yet continue. He takes them to a shuttered bowling alley and gives them a USB with the necessary information. There is video of Hannah there, albeit the facts are sketchy. The man advises them to delay returning to the border until after dusk because it is not secure at this time.
Luke gives up, and the two decide to stay and bowl for a while. It appears Serena is beginning to understand how little authority she actually possesses and how Canada has altered her perspective. The Commanders have given their approval for the fertility clinic to proceed. Serena is, however, really under house arrest and instructed to remain within the house (in a roundabout way). Oh, and she does not possess a cell phone. Luke and June begin to turn around and return into the woods, but sadly their Gilead contact steps on a landmine and has his leg completely severed. When he started yelling and crying out in the forest, torchlights begin to dance on the horizon, and the duo decides to try and tourniquet the wound and assist him. He begs them to flee, and they comply. Sadly, they are apprehended and arrested while travelling on a public road and drag them off in various directions.
