A Plan Unraveling at Jezebel’s

THE HANDMAID'S TALE Season 6 Episode 5

As the episode starts, it’s very dark in Jezebel’s, Gilead’s den of hypocrisy, where commanders give in to their worst desires while preaching about being good. June Osborne and Moira Strand, pretending to be Marthas, sneak into this viper’s nest with a mission—to save the women trapped there—including Janine Lindo (Madeline Brewer), before Mayday’s planned bombing destroys the commanders in the penthouse. Moira feels terrible when she goes back to Jezebel’s, where she went through unimaginable horrors. Her face shows that she is determined, but the weight of memories shows in her eyes. When June finds out that Commander Bell, a man whose cruelty knows no bounds, has been torturing Janine, her heart breaks. This new information makes June even more determined, even though the risks are growing.

The episode’s name character, Janine, is a shining example of strength. Even though she’s been through terrible things, her spirit hasn’t been broken. The way Madeline Brewer plays Janine is electrifying, capturing her quiet heroism and unwavering hope. Janine recognizes June right away when Moira and June come up to her in the penthouse, though their masks partially hide their faces. She is happy to see a familiar face, but she needs to get somewhere quickly. She leads them to a room that is empty and says she will be there soon. We find out here that Janine has been playing her own risky game. To get away from Bell’s cruel control, she has made a weak alliance with Commander Lawrence, a man whose morals are both complicated and broken. Janine knows Lawrence isn’t perfect because Gilead’s sins are on his hands, but she thinks he’s not as bad as monsters like Bell. Because she promised to keep him safe, she gave him a powerful tool: a secret peephole that Jezebel’s women use to spy on their clients. In this way, Lawrence hears a conversation that breaks his illusions.

Lawrence’s Awakening

The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 5 Review _ Recap

There is a lot of ambition and betrayal in the penthouse. The High Commanders, led by the hateful Bell, get together to enjoy their power. They talk about how much they dislike Lawrence and his idea of New Bethlehem, which they say will be a place of reform meant to make Gilead look better. Lawrence listens in and finds out the truth: New Bethlehem is a lie, a trap to get repatriates like Rita to come back before the commanders turn on them and bring back Gilead’s harsh rules. Even worse, they want to hang Lawrence on the Wall and blame him for their so-called progressive experiment failing. The news hits you right in the gut. Lawrence thought he could lead Gilead to a less harsh future, but now he sees that he was tricked. His coworkers want to wait a few years, let New Bethlehem fill up with hopeful refugees, then kill them all and get things back to the way they were. Commanders raise a glass of scotch and a smug smile to their successful coup. They have no idea that Lawrence’s discovery has started a new game.

June and Moira’s Fight for Survival

The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 5-

In the empty room, Janine meets June and Moira back at Jezebel’s. Her presence is a bright spot in the darkness. She knows ahead of time about Mayday’s plan to bomb the penthouse and save the women and she’s ready to help. They are told by Janine that the other women at Jezebel’s are eager for freedom and will be ready when the time comes. She gives very important information: the commanders get to the penthouse through a secret elevator from the garage and she gives them the code and full instructions on how to use it. June gets so upset when she sees Janine in pain that she offers to take her out of Jezebel’s right away. Moira, ever the pragmatist, objects, arguing that deviating from the plan could jeopardize the entire operation. Janine, true to her selfless nature, refuses to leave until all the women are safe. “Next week,” Moira promises. Janine slips away, leaving June and Moira to grapple with their next move.

It doesn’t last long when everyone is united. A Guardian walks into the room, suspicious that there are two Marthas—there when there shouldn’t be any. He doesn’t want to look into it, though—he sees a chance to take advantage of it. He grabs a piece of paper with Janine’s instructions and code on it and hides it in a locker. He then moves toward Moira with the intent to attack her. But June and Moira have seen how cruel Gilead can be before. They fought their way out of worse. Moira quickly and violently chokes the Guardian with a phone cord and June helps hold him down. The violence is sad and doesn’t lead to any victories. Now that the Guardian is dead, they have to figure out how to get rid of the body. They try to get the paper out of the locker but can’t, so they have to hide the evidence first. They drag the body to the coal-powered washing machine and put it in the furnace, where the fire burns up their crime.

Just as they are about to leave, danger strikes again. Luke (O-T Fagbenle) and Ellen, who were waiting outside with friends, are confronted by a second Guardian, who tells them to leave. Luke tries to stop them, but the Guardians’ anger makes them have to give in. Now June and Moira are stuck at Jezebel’s because they can’t get away. June looks for Commander Lawrence in the parking lot and finds him. She blocks his way and begs for help because she knows he’s their only chance. Lawrence hesitates. He knows that his coworkers have betrayed him, and his mind is racing. He finally gives up and offers to hide them in the trunk of his car. To save New Bethlehem, he needs the penthouse commanders to leave. This is a strange way that his goals now match up with Mayday’s. However, no one in Gilead can afford to trust.

Serena’s Dangerous Alliance

The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 5 Recap &

Serena Joy Waterford is navigating her own dangerous path somewhere else. Always the planner, Serena’s Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) tells her to come up with a way to make the lives of Gilead’s handmaids better. Serena suggests a fertility clinic as a place where handmaids could work without being forced to work for infertile couples. Lydia agrees with Serena and tells her to ask High Commander Wharton for help, who is rich and powerful.

The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 5

Wharton tries to win Serena’s heart by dancing with her on a street that isn’t crowded and giving her expensive flowers. He shows her the library he built for the kids in New Bethlehem and says that girls will be able to use it, which is in line with Serena’s ideas. They propose marriage while the library is named after them both. He pulls a ring out of his pocket during a moment of soft light.

Serena hesitates because she thinks that having a child will stop her from achieving her goals, but Wharton promises to support her and accept her son Noah. Serena agrees because she feels safe and believes that God wants them to be together. On the other hand, the episode gives away dark secrets. The progressive exterior of Wharton doesn’t match up with his role as a commander of Gilead, which makes it seem like he’s using Serena to improve his image and diplomatic ties. The dim and ominous lighting in the scene where he proposes means that bad things are going to happen. Serena may fail because she trusts too much.

Nick’s Burden and Wharton’s Warning

The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 5 Review _ Recap

While this is going on, Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) is dealing with his own moral dilemma. Earlier, he killed Toby, a young Guardian, to protect himself after the boy saw something that could be used against him. He feels bad about what he did, especially since Wharton warns him about the shooting without knowing that Nick is the one who did it. Nick is praised for being loyal, but he is hiding a secret that could kill him. The way he talked to Wharton and Lawrence shows how complicated Gilead’s commanders were. They were all dealing with their own problems and goals. Nick’s future is still not clear. Will he play his loyalist role or risk everything to be forgiven?

Before the Guardians attack, June and Moira confront a deeper truth. Their heated exchange about whose suffering is greater—June’s as a Handmaid or Moira’s as a Black lesbian in Gilead—threatens to fracture their bond. But they quickly recognize the trap: comparing traumas only empowers their oppressors. “If we start comparing our suffering, those fuckers have won,” Moira declares, a rallying cry for unity. This moment of clarity strengthens their resolve to fight together, not against each other

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 5 Review

“Janine” is a story of suspense, betrayal, and strength that shows how choices we make affect the harsh world of Gilead. After finding out about a plot against him, Lawrence has to deal with his part in the system. Meanwhile, June and Moira’s mission at Jezebel’s shows how expensive it is to fight back. Serena’s engagement, which was based on lies, is a sign of false hope. People want to fight for freedom because of how brave Janine is.

Natalia Leite directed the episode, which builds tension with a dark scene with Jezebel and a dark scene with the proposal. The furnace’s flames represent the characters’ resolve. The emotional weight of the story is held up by Brewer, Moss, and Wiley’s strong performances.

Episode 5 of Season 6 of The Handmaid’s Tale leaves us with a lot of questions: Will Lawrence betray June and Moira or join their cause? Can Serena see through Wharton’s charm before it’s too late? And will Janine’s hope survive the inferno of Gilead? Tune in to Hulu on Tuesdays in the US or Channel 4 starting May 3 in the UK to find out.
