The sixth episode of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6, titled “SURPRISE,” brings an emotional storm as plans unravel and loyalties fracture. After inching closer to freedom with Moira and Janine’s help, June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) is forced to make impossible choices. What begins with hope ends with betrayal—and a painful revelation that could change everything.
In the previous episode, “Janine,” June and Moira Strand (Samira Wiley) had barely escaped capture at Jezebel’s while trying to execute the Mayday escape plan. With Guardians closing in and Luke (O-T Fagbenle) forced to leave them behind, June had no choice but to turn to High Commander Joseph Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) for help. Surprisingly, Lawrence agreed to assist, not out of compassion, but because Mayday’s plan aligned with his own political ambition.
LAWRENCE’S CALCULATED SUPPORT
As Episode 6 begins, Commander Lawrence is quietly pleased. The Mayday plan to bomb Jezebel’s would eliminate the commanders conspiring against him. For Lawrence, this is a chance to climb higher in the hierarchy of Gilead, clearing his path to execute reforms he’s long contemplated. He agrees to shelter June and Moira and even offers to drive them to the border.
But June has one last task to complete—retrieving the heartfelt letters written by the women at Jezebel’s.The goal of these letters was to get to loved ones outside of Gilead. They were a small but important act of resistance. Lawrence says no to the side trip because time is short. So, June turns to Nick Blaine (Max Minghella), the only person she thinks she can trust.
NICK’S DANGEROUS TASK
Nick agrees to retrieve the letters. He heads to Jezebel’s, finds the locker, and recovers the documents. But as he turns to leave, he runs into Commander Bell, who spots him with Janine (Madeline Brewer). Quick-thinking as ever, Janine covers for Nick by pretending he is a frequent visitor with a favorite girl there. Nick plays along and narrowly escapes suspicion.
He meets June at Lawrence’s home, where the plan changes again. Nick asks June to spend the night with him before crossing the border. His father-in-law, High Commander Wharton (Lucas Neff), is away, and Nick wants one last moment of connection. Burdened by guilt and longing for comfort, Nick tries to convince June to stay. She reluctantly agrees.
Moira, meanwhile, leaves in Lawrence’s car, heading for the border. June assumes she has safely crossed into freedom.

AN UNEXPECTED REFUGE
Nick’s plan falls apart when Wharton returns unexpectedly. Alarmed, Nick asks June to wait in his car and, if he doesn’t return in five minutes, to head to Serena Joy’s (Yvonne Strahovski) place in New Bethlehem. Time ticks away, and June follows the plan.
June walks up to Serena’s door, drenched from the rain. The meeting is tense. June says she came to find Nick to ask him to join her and Holly in moving to Alaska. Serena lets her in, even though she isn’t sure. A painful and betraying part of their shared past comes to the surface. Serena says she always meant well, even though she did bad things. June isn’t ready to forgive yet. All she wants is a bed and some peace for the night.
In the morning, Serena surprises June with a home-cooked breakfast—and a reunion with Rita (Amanda Brugel), who now lives in New Bethlehem.Serena acts like she has changed and is now working to bring families back together and make society more fair.
A VISION FOR NEW BETHLEHEM
As June observes Serena’s life in New Bethlehem, the tension between hope and delusion becomes clear. Serena reveals her engagement to Commander Wharton, a man June doesn’t trust. She warns Serena that once again, she might be trading freedom for the illusion of safety under a powerful man’s control.
But Serena is convinced that change is coming. Women are allowed to read here. Families are reuniting. New Bethlehem, to her, is Gilead’s chance at redemption. June, however, knows better. She’s seen what power does in Gilead—and knows it never really changes.
A DESPERATE ESCAPE PLAN
The story turns once again when Nick arrives at Serena’s. He’s visibly shaken. He begs June to leave with him and start over in Paris—a promise he once made after they first became intimate. He dreams of a life where they are free, far away from Gilead and its violence.
For a moment, June is tempted. But her heart is tethered to her daughter, still trapped in Gilead. She can’t leave—not yet. Their conversation is interrupted by Commander Wharton, and Serena quickly steps in. She distracts Wharton, asking him to go for a walk, while June and Nick hide in a room.
THE BETRAYAL
In the final moments of the episode, the heartbreaking truth is revealed. Nick, under pressure from Wharton, decides to protect himself. Wharton had questioned Nick’s visit to Jezebel and suspected him of killing the wounded Guardian. Instead of owning up to his involvement with Mayday, Nick spins a lie—he claims to be investigating a potential Mayday plot and warns Wharton about the bombing at Jezebel.
To make his case convincing, he turns over the letters and the escape map—evidence of Mayday’s mission. Wharton is impressed by Nick’s supposed loyalty. As a result, he shuts down Jezebel’s entirely.
THE DEVASTATION
This move destroys everything June, Moira, Luke, Janine, and the Mayday resistance had worked for. The bombing never happens. The letters are confiscated. The women at Jezebel’s are likely to be returned to the camps—or worse. Nick’s decision, made out of fear and self-preservation, undoes the months of planning and puts countless lives at risk.
For June, this betrayal cuts deeper than most. She had always believed that if there was one man in Gilead who truly supported her, it was Nick. Now, that illusion is shattered. Trust is gone. Love is tainted by cowardice. And her hope for freedom dims once more.
WHAT COMES NEXT?
June may now be a target. Wharton knows about the plan. Serena may suspect the real reason June returned. Will she remain silent—or will her loyalty to Gilead outweigh her gratitude to June?
The closing moments of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 6 leave viewers with harrowing questions. Will June manage to escape once and for all? Will Serena expose her? And can Mayday recover from this crushing blow?
Only time will tell.
