It’s been a long, painful road for June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss), and as Season 6 of THE HANDMAID’S TALE begins, the stakes have never been higher.
Before diving into the gripping events of Season 6, Episode 1 (“Train”), let’s quickly look back at how Season 5 left things. June (Elisabeth Moss) had risked everything in her ongoing mission to save her daughter Hannah and bring Gilead to its knees. As Gilead maintained its brutal grip on power, resistance forces were growing. Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) had introduced New Bethlehem, a separate space for fugitives to return under Gilead’s supervision—a rebranding move to fix Gilead’s tainted reputation. But tensions were boiling over. Canada, once a refuge, had become hostile toward American refugees. And when the U.S. attempted a daring rescue of Hannah, the mission failed tragically, only worsening international tensions. As the season closed, June’s life was in chaos—her husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle) was in trouble, her daughter still out of reach, and she was once again forced to run.
Now, we find June on a train headed west, escaping from everything yet again. She’s traveling with her daughter Nichole, and surprisingly, so is Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski)—the very woman who helped build the system that tore June’s world apart.
June and Serena are seated together with their babies—June with Nichole and Serena with her son Noah. It’s an incredibly tense situation. Serena asks to use the restroom, leaving June momentarily with both children. June, bruised and battered, reveals she was hit by a Gilead sympathizer just the day before. Despite her clear distrust, she allows Serena to help. Afterward, June falls into a restless sleep, only to wake and panic when Serena and Nichole are not in view. Though Serena returns shortly, the suspicion lingers thick between them. Yet, even with the distrust, Serena finds a doctor to tend to June’s wounds.
Back in Gilead, Commander Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) has been returned to his home under guard. His wife Rose (Carey Cox) watches quietly from the porch as he’s escorted inside. Soon, High Commander Mackenzie (Josh Charles) arrives, pressuring Nick to reaffirm his loyalty—especially to his daughter. Mackenzie’s presence is a reminder that Nick, though torn, remains trapped in Gilead’s web.
On the train, June uses a quiet moment to call Moira (Samira Wiley), giving her an update—and revealing that Luke has been arrested by Canadian authorities. Plans to head toward Vancouver are now scrapped; the Canadian government can’t manage the swelling refugee numbers. Serena, hearing this, admits she can never undo the damage she’s done, but tells June she wants to help however she can.
Back in Canada, Moira meets with Mark Tuello (Sam Jaeger). Mark shares grim news: the Canadian government may be forced to sever ties with the remnants of the American government to maintain peace with Gilead. Help from within—especially from American women like Moira—is now the only way to disrupt Gilead’s hold. Moira volunteers without hesitation.
On the train, June and Serena are invited to join a group of women sharing their traumatic pasts in Gilead. For the first time, Serena is forced to sit and listen to June speak about Hannah and the atrocities she’s endured. Other women recall their horrifying experiences at Jezebel’s, the beatings, and the abuses. Serena remains mostly silent, but it’s clear the weight of the group’s pain is bearing down on her.
Soon after, the doctor who helped June earlier returns with an urgent warning: security knows Serena’s true identity. She is not safe. June, alarmed, asks the doctor to be gentle when checking on baby Noah. But as the doctor examines him, he exposes Serena to the rest of the train car, announcing that she is Serena Joy Waterford, a key figure in Gilead’s regime.
The passengers react with shock and rage. As whispers turn to shouts, June warns Serena to stay calm, but Serena pushes back, arguing with the crowd, only escalating the situation.
Security officers arrive to inspect Serena’s travel papers. Though there’s clear evidence against her, one officer, revealing that his own son died during Gilead’s rise, checks the documents and walks away. His decision is cryptic, but it gives permission for the mob to decide Serena’s fate. The officers walk away. Those unwilling to witness violence leave. Those who remain look ready to exact justice themselves.
June, torn between her hatred for Serena and her moral compass, pulls the emergency brake. The train screeches to a stop. In the chaos, June grabs baby Noah and helps Serena escape, pushing her off the train and into the darkness as angry voices howl behind them.
When the sun rises, the train arrives in Alaska, where a new flag with two stars waves—a sign of a new beginning. The episode ends not with a sense of safety, but of uncertainty. Serena is still out there. Luke is in custody. Hannah is still in Gilead. But June, battered yet unbroken, now finds herself with a new purpose and a new base of operations in Alaska.
THE HANDMAID’S TALE SEASON 6 EPISODE 1 ENDING
June walks into a refugee camp, holding Nichole close. She walks through the camp, worn out, emotionally worn out, and not sure what’s next. All of a sudden, A nurse calls out, “June?” It’s soft, but it sounds very familiar. June is shocked to see her mother, Holly Maddox (Cherry Jones), standing in front of her. She is still alive and well.
Right now, everything is too much. June thought for five seasons that her mother had died in the Colonies, most likely because of the harsh environment, disease or the punishments Gilead gave to women who were sent there. The last thing June saw of Holly was a sad picture in a Red Center slideshow. This made her worry about the worst. Now, though, her mother is standing there, still alive.
June’s feelings fall apart as the two women hug and hold each other tightly. Holly is just as shocked and upset as everyone else. She whispers words of comfort and says she held on to hope—hope that she could see her daughter again. She tells June that Gilead kept her alive in the Colonies because she knew a lot about medicine and made her treat aunts and guardians.
With powerful performances and a hauntingly tense reunion between June and Serena, “Train” launches the final season with emotional depth and dramatic momentum. The conflict between justice and mercy, vengeance and forgiveness, continues to define June’s journey.
Stay tuned—because the battle against Gilead is far from over.
