The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 Episode 3 Recap
When it is revealed in flash-forwards that Midge does become famous, her rise to fame in the 1960s seems highly improbable. Back in the future, the year is 1984 in Israel. Midge hops on a helicopter to see her son Ethan who is about to get married. It’s obvious that things are tense between him and his mother, but at least she’s making an effort to improve things these days. In the meantime, a joke tally board from 1961 reveals that none of Midge’s gags had been used on the show. She’s been there for weeks, and she still can’t seem to break in. A young Ethan is taken to therapy in the 1960s because he refuses to sleep in his own bed. Midge tries something fresh by coaxing him back to his own bed and away from hers. When Joel arrives to provide a hand, he complains that his folks are driving him crazy.
After the fire in the tea room, Rose has become anxious and suspicious. While Abe is under incredible stress because he has made his first typo in a published work. Ford gives his blessing to one of Midge’s gags in the writer’s room. In a spirit of jubilation, she gives Susie a call. There is an audible grumble from Midge as Ford botches her joke during the performance. Mike advises Midge to beg for her job, but she is afraid of being let go because of her blunder. Midge tries to make amends with Ford over cocktails after work. Ford acknowledges her remorse but insists he is not at fault. He fabricates an intentional motive for his actions. As a result, Midge loses her cool and gets into a heated dispute with the TV host in front of the entire bar.
Midge insists the joke was funny; she just didn’t deliver it very well. She storms off, certain of her imminent dismissal. In the meantime, Rose has asked Susie to obtain a gun because she is afraid her competitors will kill her. The circumstances of Joel’s life worsen. His parents made an unwelcome appearance at the club, much to the chagrin of the proprietor and the patrons. Midge attempts a stand-up routine but is relentlessly heckled by Joel’s parents. Joel’s mom and dad are relentless in their pursuit of details about Mei and the baby from Midge. She is unable to reveal the whole story and instead tells them that Mei is currently trapped in China. Joel agrees to the deception, and his father makes plans for a secret operation to rescue her. The truth is eventually revealed, and Joel has to admit it. Surprisingly, his parents offer him solace in this situation.
Susie tells Midge that her contention has been published and that it wouldn’t be shocking to her if Midge were fired on Monday. Then, Susie gets a phone call from behind bars and arranges to meet a total stranger. This lady asserts that she is Rose’s rival. She’s been locked up on charges of sparking the blaze at the tearoom. It appears that Rose’s threats were effective, since the criminal concerned has now abandoned her. The technique Ethan devised to get to sleep on the toilet seems to be working, but Abe continues repositioning the youngster. A dispute arises between Midge and Abe as they discuss the plan. Abe is no longer on board with the proposal. The following night, Abe had a private conversation with Ethan about fear and the fact that there are many more significant things to be terrified of than one’s own bed. Abe’s supposedly wise remarks terrify Ethan to the point of near paralysis.
At the office, Midge braces herself for the possibility that this will be her last day of employment. Ford learns that this program is the most popular talk show in the United States. After the live recording, they go roller skating at the Rockefeller Center Rink to celebrate. Assuming she hasn’t been fired after all, Midge shares the happy news with Susie. Ford has a private conversation with Midge, during which he attempts to kiss her. Midge makes a remark about Ford’s marital status, but he continues to flirt with her nonetheless. Susie goes looking for Mike as Midge is being hit on. After making up, the two agree to meet for lunch. At the end of this episode, Midge goes home, glad that she still has a job. After Abe’s discussion, she finds a terrified Ethan back in her bed. After hearing Joel’s tragic news, his parents return to their bed and embrace one other in warmth.
