The Penguin‘s second-to-last episode last week brought us closer to Oz Cobb’s exciting ending. In episode 7, “Top Hat” we saw a young Oz (Ryder Allen) and learned about the terrible thing that happened with his brothers Jack and Benny. In a fit of rage and jealousy, Oz did something that indirectly caused their deaths, which is still a scary event in his life. In the present, Oz (Colin Farrell) has stirred up the criminal underworld and brought together the leaders of Gotham’s gangs to fight the powerful Gigante-Maroni crime family. But things went badly when Sofia Gigante (Cristin Milioti) captured Francis, Oz’s mother, (Deirdre O’Connell). This meant that war was going to happen soon.
Sal Maroni’s (Clancy Brown) and Oz’s fight got worse as they fought over power, and Sal’s sudden death ended the dramatic fight. Oz’s victory didn’t last long because Sofia let out her anger in a literal explosion, leaving him to think about what to do next in a city that feels more and more hostile. At the end of the episode, Detective Marcus Wise (Craig Walker) made fun of Oz by calling him “Penguin,” which meant that his enemies were getting closer.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE SEASON FINALE, “A GREAT OR LITTLE THING”
The Penguin Season 1 Episode 8 is called “A Great or Little Thing,” and it will air next week on HBO. It is the season finale and a thrilling climax. Long-kept secrets will be revealed in this episode which will be the shocking end to Oz’s journey. After weeks of building tension, Oz and Sofia are finally going to fight. In this final showdown—the power struggle they’ve been in will surely explode, and it’s not clear who will make it out alive.
The official summary says that Oz’s secrets will come out, and as he gets closer to his goal, he will face Sofia one last time. Oz is likely to make it to The Batman: Part II, so his survival is likely, but not certain. But Sofia is still a wild card. Her hatred for Oz makes it unlikely that she will live, but her intelligence and toughness make it possible that she might. If she makes it through, it makes it more likely that her character will show up in more Matt Reeves movies. If Sofia does live, though, she and Oz might always be at odds with each other, which could make it hard to fit them into the bigger Batman universe.
This finale is likely to push Oz to his emotional and physical limits. Bulgarian fighter Sofia has already shown that she is strong by using physical and mental attacks. As Oz gets ready for the final battle — he may have to deal with both Sofia’s anger and his guilt over the deaths of his brothers and the damage he’s caused. The fight is going to be intense because Sofia wants Oz to suffer like she has. Oz may be reminded of his traumatic past.
People are very interested in finding out if this episode will end Oz’s story with Sofia or give him new opportunities in the larger Gotham crime scene. It’s clear, though, that this is the end of Oz’s journey in Season 1 of The Penguin. The stakes are higher than ever. And will he win? — Or — will Gotham lose another soul to the never-ending cycle of crime and revenge?

The Penguin Season 1 Episode 7 Recap
The penultimate episode starts with a flashback to Oz’s childhood, when he (Ryder Allen) was a child and saw his mother, Francis (Emily Meade), have trouble with money. It’s clear that Oz is envious of his brothers Jack (Owen Asztalos) and Benny (Nico Tirozzi) as he sees them bond with their mother and get praised by crime boss Rex Calabrese (Louis Cancelmi). As soon as they leave to play—Oz is left behind because of his disability. He gets angry and locks his brothers in an empty trolley station. During the storm that follows, they tragically drown. It’s not clear from the episode whether Oz planned this tragedy, which makes it hard to tell if he is a sociopath or just a victim of his circumstances.
Going back to the present, Oz finds his Crown Point apartment in shambles when he gets there. Sofia surprised Vic (Rhenzy Feliz) and now Vic says that Sofia took Francis hostage. Before Oz can think, Salvatore Maroni (Clancy Brown) shows up and hits him with a golf club because he doesn’t believe Oz’s warnings that Sofia is lying. Oz begs for his mother’s life over the phone and in the end, he lets Sal and Sofia do their work.
At Francis’s weak point, Sofia uses her to her advantage by telling her that Oz lied about her death. But Francis won’t give in. He even hits Sofia and makes fun of her for not being able to follow in her father’s footsteps. Sofia’s anger grows when she learns that her young cousin Gia Vitti (Kenzie Grey) told the police she wasn’t sure about her family’s death. Sofia’s violent goals are shown next to times when she is weak, showing how angry she is at the life of revenge and control her father left her.
While Sal and his men try to take Oz’s drug lab, Oz uses a well-thought-out distraction to fight Sal to the death inside an old trolley car. When Sal has a heart attack, the standoff is over. Oz is happy and declares victory by shooting Sal several times, saying he has the upper hand in his war against Sofia. This event makes Oz even more determined to keep fighting against Sofia and Sal’s new government.
Sofia goes to the Brookside Children’s Home to talk to Gia. Gia implicates her by saying she saw a gas mask in Sofia’s things. Sofia can’t deny her part in the family murders; she has to say she killed them because they were “bad people.” Her emotional problems get worse, and when she goes back to Francis, she starts to fall apart. Julian Rush (Theo Rossi), her partner, tries to calm her down, but Sofia wants to be free of her dad’s shadow more than she wants to hurt Oz.
In the most exciting parts, Oz and his men get ready for Sofia to arrive at the trolley station. Sofia, however, is smart and calls Oz to let him know she is not coming. She instead put a bomb in his car that will go off in seconds. Oz barely makes it out alive by diving into the overflow tunnel, which is where his brothers died. The link between his old enemies and his new ones is a metaphor for how his life is stuck in a cycle of violence and unresolved trauma.
In another flashback, Oz tries to comfort his mother after the death of his brothers. In a rare act of motherly kindness, Francis takes Oz dancing, which motivates him to become famous. Now that we are in the present, Oz is lost and tired in the dark streets of Gotham. Detective Marcus Wise, played by Craig Walker, confronts Oz and insults him by calling him “The Penguin.” Oz’s life seems to be getting back on track until this new turn of events reminds him that it could end in the same painful way it began.
In the second-to-last episode of The Penguin —Sofia and Oz are still fighting, which sets up a very exciting ending. Oz’s bad experiences as a child and Sofia’s never-ending desire for power come together, teasing a conclusion full of revenge and heartbreak.
