The Regime Season 1 Finale: Is Herbert Zubak Dead?
Yes, Herbert Zubak is dead in the season finale of ‘The Regime.’ After the rebels overthrow the palace, Chancellor Elena Vernham and Zubak are left to fend for themselves in the wilderness. While Zubak tries to keep them safe, Elena holds on to the false hope that she can go back to the court and win her people back. Zubak finally persuades her to leave the country in order to stay alive, which causes her to call for help from Switzerland.
Despite Zubak’s attempts to protect them, Elena remains fixated on reclaiming her power. Rebels took over the palace, but the civil war is still going on, and Elena still has supporters in her country, especially in her area. The US and Emil Bartos decide to support Elena’s return to power because they think she will be easier to control than the new rebel government. But Elena has to get rid of Zubak for good in order to get this backing.
Because Elena wants to get back to power more than she wants to be with Zubak, she chooses to betray him. While Zubak is sleeping, Bartos and the Americans kill him because they think that his power over Elena could make her turn her back on them. She keeps her title, though her ministers will be watching over her a lot more.
In order to show how much she cares about Zubak, Elena keeps his body at the house. Even though she betrayed him to get power back, she feels terrible about it and looks up to him as a source of strength and loyalty. His presence makes her think about the bad things she did and the sacrifices she made in the past, which shows how complicated her character is.
Will Tracy, who created the show, first thought about giving Elena a harsher ending, like how Ceaușescu’s rule ended in Romania. But he chose a story that goes back and forth between the beginning and the present, with people still feeling the effects of what happened. Tracy wanted to show how sad it is for an autocrat like Elena to stay alive when she is ready to become a political pawn in order to keep her power.
Tracy says that Elena liked how Zubak made her feel about herself, which is related to her friendship with Zubak. He does, however, wonder if someone as self-centered as Elena can love someone else more than herself. Tracy thinks that Elena may look like she has won in public, but she really knows that she has lost mentally.
Tracy wants people to understand how leadership cycles work and what happens when you hold on to power too long. He agrees that things can be pointless at times, but he also says that bad leadership like Elena’s doesn’t last forever and can be replaced by new leadership and political will, even if the results aren’t always right away or ideal.
