THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES (‘INTERLUDE IV’) SEASON 4 EPISODE 6 – RECAP

The past always finds a way to bleed into the present, especially in the twisted, holy-roller world of The Righteous Gemstones. In Season 4 Episode 6, titled “Interlude IV,” the clock winds back to 2002—an era of chunky highlights, pop heartthrobs, and deep fractures within the Gemstone family that are just now starting to surface. This episode, like the other “Interlude” installments before it, is not about present-day drama. Instead, it peels back the curtain on the tangled roots of family loyalty, betrayal, and the slow unraveling of relationships that seemed unbreakable.

By the end of Interlude IV, we finally understand what pushed Lori (played by Megan Mullally) back into the Gemstone fold, the origin of Jesse’s troubled union with Amber (Cassidy Freeman), and the emotional landmines that young Corey (Seann William Scott) has been dodging all season. The flashback doesn’t just explain the past — it deepens the stakes of the present.

THE GEMSTONES FACE PUBLIC BACKLASH

The episode opens with Eli Gemstone (John Goodman) standing before a local board meeting, presenting a plan to expand the Gemstone Salvation Center by adding a massive 10-acre parking lot. But the town isn’t impressed. The community still remembers the infamous Y2K survival bucket scam that left them angry and disillusioned. One board member bluntly calls out Eli for exploiting desperate people. It’s clear that Eli and Aimee-Leigh (Jennifer Nettles) have fallen from grace, but they still know how to play the game. Powdered donuts, backroom handshakes, and an aggressive PR push keep the plan alive, even if their public image is crumbling.

Outside, protesters show just how unforgiving the townspeople have become. Two demonstrators throw cream pies at the couple as they exit, leaving Eli and Aimee-Leigh humiliated. Despite the backlash, Eli promises his wife a peaceful getaway at Galilee Gulch, a place that will soon become the backdrop of many pivotal family moments.

TENSION AND REVELATION AT GALILEE GULCH

The Gemstone family arrives at Galilee Gulch for what’s supposed to be a relaxing retreat, but tensions are quick to surface. Cobb Milsap (Michael Rooker), Lori’s husband and a troubled gator farm owner, joins the group with his son Corey in tow. It becomes immediately clear that Cobb is not just a bad match for Lori — he’s volatile, resentful, and emotionally distant.

Eli takes Cobb water skiing, but the activity becomes a passive-aggressive power play. Eli speeds the boat faster and faster while Cobb screams in terror. It’s an awkward and telling moment: Eli has no respect for Cobb and sees him as weak, perhaps even unworthy of Lori. Meanwhile, young Jesse and his siblings—Judy (Edi Patterson) and Kelvin (Adam DeVine)—enjoy the waterside fun, though a few personal conflicts bubble beneath the surface.

Young Jesse’s issues are front and center. He’s already gotten Amber pregnant, and though he tries to hide his anxiety, it explodes when Kelvin mocks him. Jesse lashes out, almost coming to blows with his little brother. The simmering anger in Jesse shows how early his struggles with responsibility began.

FRIENDSHIPS AND FRACTURES

Lori and Aimee-Leigh, lifelong best friends, spend time reminiscing by the shore. Lori confides in Aimee-Leigh about the strain in her marriage and how unhappy she’s become living with Cobb, who keeps the family in near-poverty. For Lori, the Gemstones represent stability and comfort — something her husband can’t offer.

Amber, heavily pregnant, is ushered off to nap, leaving the adults to their own conversations. Later, Jesse and Amber argue over baby names — Jesse wants to name the baby Stallone. Eli disapproves, pushing Jesse to choose something more traditional, like Gideon. It’s a small moment, but one that sets up years of tension between Jesse and his eldest son.

At the dinner table, young Judy’s sass is on full display. After Jesse and Amber bicker, Judy delivers a stinging one-liner: “I bet y’all will get divorced, probably right after you give birth to Tony Danza or whatever the f— y’all are calling the baby today.” Her words sting, and her timing couldn’t be worse.

A BREAKDOWN IN THE MAKING

Things spiral when Cobb shows up drunk at the Gemstone estate, furious and loud. He accuses the Gemstones of meddling in his marriage and destroying his family. The confrontation escalates, and Eli punches Cobb in the face — not just to defend his family but to assert dominance. Cobb’s presence at Galilee Gulch was never going to end well, and this confirms it.

Later, Eli visits Cobb at his gator farm in an attempt to make peace. But Cobb wants nothing to do with him. In a heartfelt and bitter moment, Cobb says, “I work hard. I provide for my family. But that ain’t what Lori likes. She likes fancy, and that ain’t never gonna be me.” He’s broken, angry, and proud. And while his flaws are undeniable, Cobb refuses to accept charity from a man like Eli.

Cobb adds that he’d rather jump into the gator pit than pray with the Gemstones. The resentment runs deep — not because Cobb is greedy, but because he’s a man who feels like he’s been beaten down by a system he never had a chance to win against. It’s this bitterness that leads him to ransack the Gemstone home. But he doesn’t steal anything — except for the gold Bible.

THE STOLEN GOLD BIBLE

THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES (‘INTERLUDE IV’)

The stolen Bible — a sacred relic in the Gemstone household — is finally explained. Cobb, in a fit of drunken rage and emotional devastation, is revealed as the thief. He doesn’t sell it or pawn it off. He takes it as a symbolic act. It’s not about greed. It’s about making a statement. The gold Bible, a symbol of the Gemstone legacy and their “holy” hustle, is taken by a man who sees through their glittering façade.

This moment ties back to the Season 4 premiere, when the Bible was shown under glass before being stolen. Now, we know how it disappeared — and why.

COREY’S SILENT STRUGGLE

Corey, caught in the crossfire between his parents, tries to stay neutral. He spends time with the Gemstone kids, enjoying moments of teenage fun, but his eyes tell a different story. He’s watching everything. Learning. Absorbing. His loyalty to both his parents pulls him in different directions, and it’s clear this internal conflict will shape the man he becomes. Interlude IV gives us a glimpse of the emotional burden Corey carries — one that continues in the present. The episode ends just as The HU’s “Wolf Totem” begins to play.

“Interlude IV” serves as a cornerstone in understanding the Gemstone family’s complex relationships and long-standing tensions. It gives crucial insight into Jesse and Amber’s early days, the source of Lori’s return, and the broken man behind the Bible theft. In typical Gemstones fashion, it’s chaotic, hilarious, uncomfortable, and deeply human — all wrapped in the trappings of religious grandeur.
