The Rookie Season 7 Episode 1 (S7E1) Recap: “The Shot”

The much-anticipated start of Season 7 of The Rookie starts off with a bang, putting us right into the busy lives of our favorite police officers. The stakes have never been higher than they were after the shocking events of Season 6, which included heartbreak, corruption scandals, and daring escapes. Let’s start with Episode 1, which is full of exciting new challenges, strange alliances, and dangerous missions that set the tone for a season that everyone will remember.

The Rookie Season 7 Episode 1: The Hunt Begins

The episode starts with a tense scene of surveillance from a rooftop. John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and Celina Juarez (Lisseth Chavez) are back at work. Nolan is still recovering from being shot. He’s not going to waste any time on his first day back. At the same time, Bailey (Jenna Dewan), who is in the National Guard, is sent overseas, and Wade Grey (Richard T. Jones), who is a detective, has been promoted to lieutenant. The team’s only goal is to find Oscar Hutchinson (Matthew Glave), a famous fugitive, and Jason Wyler (Steve Kazee), a notorious criminal who got away and caused a lot of trouble.

As soon as the team gets close to a residential area, things get very dangerous. When they break into a fortified house, a gunfight breaks out that never stops, leaving one police officer hurt. Even though most of the suspects are being held; the most wanted criminals get away. In a classic Nolan move, he captures one criminal with the help of a scooter, but his main targets are still on the run, setting up a season-long chase.

Meet the New Rookies

Back at the station, today is a day for getting to know each other and advertising. Two newcomers with fresh faces join the group: Seth Ridley (Patrick Keleher), a shy but good-hearted trainee known as the “fainting goat,” and Miles Penn (Deric Augustine), a cocky ex-cop from Texas known as the “peacock.” Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) and Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil), who are training officers, are in charge of making these new officers.

Chen, who was just promoted to training officer, takes a more modern and caring approach, while Bradford sticks to his strict ways. Because they are both competitive, they make a fun bet: which rookie will do the best over the next month? The stakes make the story more interesting and funny, especially since the ex-partners are competing for jobs.

Trouble in the Ranks

As Assistant District Attorney Wesley Evers (Shawn Ashmore) looks over evidence from last season’s corruption scandal, tensions rise. As part of his job, he finds out that a coworker said some hurtful things about his wife, Detective Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz). Wesley has doubts after the conversation, even though it is polite. This adds a personal conflict to the episode.

Officer Aaron Thorsen (Tru Valentino), meanwhile, is getting used to his new job in North Hollywood and is glad that no one knows about his past ties to the scandal’s main figures. Juarez tells Nolan how Aaron is doing, which is a short but touching moment of friendship.

Action-Packed Missions

In the second half of the episode, things get really exciting. Nolan and Juarez are called to a pharmacy to help with an armed robbery. Nolan loses a critical shot because he hesitates. The thief runs away, taking a car and destroying everything in its path. The event makes Nolan feel bad and forces him to face his doubts.

Chen and Ridley find the stolen car, but the person they are looking for has overdosed. Because Ridley’s emotional response messes up the crime scene, Chen has to give him a heartfelt pep talk about how important it is to keep his personal problems separate from his duty. Her caring attitude shows how much she has grown as a leader.

At the same time, Bradford and Penn are chasing a careless driver who crashes after a fast chase. Penn’s arrogance causes him to mess up the rules, so Bradford has to teach him a hard lesson about responsibility and professionalism.

A Nuclear Threat

The stakes go through the roof just when the team thinks they’ve seen everything. A scary new threat is found when the station’s radiation alarm goes off: a stolen nuclear weapon from the Cold War. The team is told about the dangerous mission to get the suitcase bomb from Special Agent Garza, played by Felix Solis. The episode ends with a high-speed shootout in the middle of Los Angeles after a series of false leads. Nolan finally gets over his initial reluctance and fires the critical shot that stops the suspects and secures the bomb. Chen and Bradford also shine in the final scene, which shows how well they work together and how strong they are.

The Rookie Season 7 Episode 1: Ending

Characters have touching moments at the end of the episode. A flirty exchange between Bradford and Chen suggests that their feelings are still not clear. At home, Wesley reassures Angela that he is still committed, even though he had raised doubts earlier. Bailey gets a touching voicemail from Nolan in which he tells her how much he misses her. In the last twist, Penn is found to be homeless and living in his car. His secret makes him seem more vulnerable than he normally is, which sets up an interesting plot for future episodes.

The Rookie‘s Season 7 premiere has just the right amount of action, humor, and emotional depth. The Mid-Wilshire Division is off to a thrilling start. There are suspects on the loose, new officers are getting used to their jobs, and there is no nuclear threat. Next week, only on ABC, you can see how these stories progress.
