THE WHITE LOTUS SEASON 4: FILMING LOCATIONS, SPOILERS & RELEASE WINDOW

THE WHITE LOTUS made its debut on July 11, 2021, introducing audiences to a luxurious Hawaiian resort where tensions among wealthy guests erupted in unexpected ways. Set against the stunning backdrop of Maui, Season 1 quickly set the tone for what would become one of HBOs most distinctive and dissected series. In Season 2, the series relocated to the romantic coastline of Sicily, Italy, exploring themes of infidelity, power, and generational trauma. Season 3 took us to the lush, spiritual chaos of Thailand, ending with a finale that felt more like a Shakespearean tragedy than a vacation. Now, The big question fans are now asking is: Where is Season 4 being filmed?

THE WHITE LOTUS SEASON 4: FILMING LOCATIONS

At this time, the filming location for Season 4 of The White Lotus has not been officially confirmed. Creator Mike White has expressed interest in exploring new settings, with possibilities including Egypt, Mexico, and various European countries. However, no definitive decision has been announced regarding the next season’s location.

In the final moments of Season 3, we witnessed a bloodbath: Rick (Walton Goggins) discovered that Jim (portrayed by Scott Glenn)—Sritala’s husband was actually his father. Rick’s rage led to a shootout that left Jim, Rick, and his girlfriend Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) dead. It was a climax steeped in emotional depth and fatal decisions. Series creator Mike White reflected on it with Greek-tragedy parallels, noting that Rick’s revenge was what ultimately doomed Chelsea. Gaitok, a seemingly gentle monk, betraying his Buddhist values to kill Rick added a haunting complexity to the aftermath. Meanwhile, Belinda (Natasha Rothwell) took a shady payout to keep quiet, and the Ratliffs left Thailand alive but broke—a darkly ironic twist for a family obsessed with wealth.

And yet, amidst all that chaos, White dropped a tantalizing tease: “For the fourth season, I want to get a little bit out of the ‘crashing waves against rocks’ vernacular.”

That one quote shifted everything.

NO MORE BEACHES?

Fans immediately began speculating. Would The White Lotus finally move away from its beachside backdrops? Could we be heading to the snow? Somewhere mountainous? Maybe even landlocked?

The idea of a chilly, alpine White Lotus sparked interest, but executive producer David Bernad was quick to pop that bubble.Mike White is not for it,” he said, firmly shutting down the possibility of a winter-themed season. “He’s a California guy. I feel confident we will never do a season in the cold.”

That rules out the Alps, the Rockies, and anything involving ski lifts. But it doesn’t mean the setting won’t be drastically different.

THE SEARCH FOR A LOCATION BEGINS

Francesca Orsi, HBO’s head of drama, confirmed earlier this year that Season 4 is happening—and that location scouting is already underway. “We’re going on some locations scouting in the next couple of weeks, so we’ll know soon”, she told Deadline back in February. While she kept details vague, she did hint that “chances are somewhere in Europe.”  “I can’t really say where we’re going to land but chances are somewhere in Europe.”

That lines up with an earlier Deadline report suggesting that a European Four Seasons hotel is being eyed as a potential filming location. Since the real-life Four Seasons brand has partnered with The White Lotus since Season 1, this feels like a logical continuation.

But where in Europe?

Nothing is official yet, but sources have floated the French Riviera as a strong possibility. Think Monte Carlo glamour, Cannes chic, and Saint-Tropez secrets. It’s luxurious, sun-drenched, and culturally rich—a perfect playground for the kind of elite drama the series thrives on.

AUSTRALIA: A DARK HORSE CONTENDER

Surprisingly, another location has crept into the conversation—Australia. While speaking at Sydney’s Vivid Festival, Mike White admitted, “My dream would be to hit every continent, so yeah, [Australia] is like its own continent basically. It would be so fun… the beauty is inarguable.”

Australia checks a lot of boxes: exotic, scenic, warm (important for Mike White), and home to several high-end resorts that could easily transform into a White Lotus setting. So far, there’s no official confirmation, but don’t be surprised if the land Down Under becomes the new backdrop.

CHANGES BEHIND THE SCENES

Season 4 won’t just bring a new location—it’s also losing a key creative force. Composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer, whose haunting and iconic scores defined the show’s unsettling tone, announced he will not return. He cited creative differences and frustrations over the direction of the Season 3 soundtrack. “It was like being in a rock band where the guitarist doesn’t understand the singer,” Tapia de Veer told The New York Times.

His departure leaves a void in the show’s atmospheric style, though Mike White’s vision remains firmly intact.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN SEASON 4

So what can fans expect beyond the location? While no cast members have been announced yet, it’s possible we could see returning characters—just as Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya (RIP) linked Seasons 1 and 2.

With White confirming he wants to continue exploring human nature through a “spiritual or Eastern religion lens,” we might see themes of morality, karma, and redemption explored even further—just in a new climate.

And yes, there will almost certainly be more death. “There’s always room for more murders at the White Lotus hotels,” White quipped. At this point, it’s practically the franchise’s motto.

THE WHITE LOTUS SEASON 4 CAST

While the cast for the fourth season remains under wraps, the series is known for introducing new characters each season, with occasional returns of familiar faces. Notably, composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer, who crafted the show’s iconic scores, will not return for the upcoming season due to creative differences. This departure may lead to a fresh musical direction for the series.

RELEASE DATE: WHEN WILL SEASON 4 AIR?

Here’s the tricky part. While HBO officially renewed the series in January, production on Season 4 isn’t expected to begin until sometime in 2026. With writing, casting, and location logistics still underway, fans might have to wait until late 2026 or early 2027 to check into the next White Lotus.

Until then, the guessing game continues—and that’s part of the fun.

From Maui to Sicily to Thailand, THE WHITE LOTUS has turned luxury travel into a battlefield of class conflict, buried secrets, and interpersonal chaos. With each season, creator Mike White has pushed the envelope further, balancing sharp satire with psychological depth. Wherever Season 4 ends up—be it a Mediterranean escape or an Australian retreat—one thing’s certain: there will be scandal, style, and at least one body bag.
