The previous episode of The Wonder Years Reboot, was once used as a real decongestant for whooping cough and chest colds. Did it, however, leave you smelling like a barnyard? If hearing Lillian speak about quarantine made you think of the onset of the epidemic during WWII, you’re not alone. Overall, “Goose Grease” is another excellent episode of The Wonder Years, full of stellar performances, lighter humour, a thought-provoking look of history through a modern lens, and a devastating conclusion that could spark the show’s first multi-episode plot. The Wonder Years Season 1 Episode 18 Recap
The comic Richard Gant reprises his role as Granddaddy Clisby in “Goose Grease.” As father and son, Gant and Dulé Hill have wonderful onscreen chemistry, and this episode delves deeper into the dynamics between Clisby, his son, and his grandchild. Dean goes to the hospital for a blood infection skillfully and poignantly addresses how terrible it was (and still is) for Black people to trust a racist institution with their life. Clisby questions the acuity and know-how of his female doctor in the last episode. which goes into the widespread misogyny of the 1960s. He’s even more perplexed when he learns she isn’t married. Shame on you! Despite the show’s occasional cotton-candy warmth and comfort-food tone, it never skirts around the real issues.
