This Is Us Season 6 Episode 12 Recap
The episode begins in the present day, with Kate and Toby conversing over coffee the morning following the events of the previous episode. Toby tells Kate that he’ll accept the setback to his career and return to LA to work at a job he despises in order to prioritize his family. Toby agrees with Kate’s suggestion of couples therapy. They begin the couple’s treatment and begin their new occupations at the same time. Kate is late to a session six months into their sessions, resulting in a heated argument. Toby believes Kate is constantly putting his parenting skills to the test. Toby makes a dig at Kate’s pay during Hailey’s second birthday party, which lands hard on her because she was just talking about how much she enjoyed her job before he said it. Kevin and Madison both see Kate isn’t feeling well. Kate inquires about how to recognize when it’s time to call it quits on a marriage.
The current time leaps to 16 months later, to a night when Kate and Toby have a romantic meal for two. Toby’s disdain for his profession is a sore point, especially since Kate adores hers, thus they have little in common. Kate tries to give uninvited parenting advice to Toby, which leads to a fight. Toby raises his hand as a result of this dispute. Their son Jack overhears the conflict and decides to intervene, which is incredibly distressing. Kate informs Toby that it’s time they confess their marriage is ended after getting Jack back to bed. Toby packs his belongings and moves into an apartment, and he and Kate work out their differences peacefully. Watching Toby plead Kate to salvage his marriage is an emotional gut hit, and Kate is equally distraught when she tells him no. Kate and Toby officially end their relationship by signing divorce papers. After filing her divorce papers, Kate meets up with Phillip and the two attend karaoke together, singing “Tubthumping.” Toby eventually buys a home of his own and begins to establish a life with his children and Kate, though not in the way he had envisioned. He even manages to fall in love with someone new.
The episode is intercut with flash-forwards that focus on Kate’s relationship with Phillip, hitting the major milestones in reverse order, beginning with their wedding day when Kate receives a call from Toby, who finally understands what Kate meant about their stories still being connected, despite their divorce. Kevin encounters his ex-wife Sophie and her husband at Kate and Phillip’s engagement party, which is flashed forward in the episode. Rebecca is battling with her memory more than ever, though she does remember Phillip’s name in the end. Randall is working on his senate campaign, and Rebecca is struggling with her memory more than ever. In another flashback, Phillip is playing cards with Jack as he prepares to propose to Kate. When Phillip proposes to Kate, they are all at dinner together — Kate, Phillip, Hailey, and Jack. Toby takes Phillip to a pub before the proposal to examine Phillip’s relationship with Hailey and Jack. Phillip assures Toby that he loves the kids and recognizes his part in their upbringing, implying that he has no intention of taking Toby’s place as their father. It brings the two men closer together, and Toby helps Phillip understand football since he understands how important the sport is to Kate and the Pearson family.
Kate and Phillip’s first date is also flashed forward in the episode, but Kate ends up needing to take a break. Phillip tracks her down outside the restaurant to see how she’s doing. Phillip cracks a joke but then proceeds to tell Kate about his first marriage, which turns out to be a heartbreaking tale. He tells Kate that he wants to be happy with her again, and they kiss for the first time. The episode’s last flash-forward takes place in the far future, when a grown-up Jack performs at a bar with both his parents and their new partners in attendance.
