This Is Us Season 6 Episode 1 Recap

This Is Us Season 6 Episode 1 Flashback:  Rebecca and Jack rush around the kitchen on the morning of January 28, 1986, getting ready for the day ahead. When the song “I Can’t Fight This Feeling” comes on the radio, Jack croons it to his wife and declares, “REO Speedwagon are the new Beatles.” They smooch a little, and it’s cute to see Mom and Dad get hot over the Toaster Strudel or whatever, but the kids come in, and breakfast takes precedence. Rebecca has prepared a pitcher of Tang in honor of the historic launch of the space shuttle Challenger scheduled for later that day.

Before leaving for work, Jack tells the kids to keep a tight eye on the liftoff because he wants to hear about “every detail” afterward. The Big Three later witness the spacecraft explode shortly after launch in their primary school classroom with their teacher and classmates. The Pearson children, understandably, are affected by the event. Randall (Sterling K. Brown) is concerned that the children of schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe, who was on board, may go hungry that night. Kate mentions her instructors’ tears. Kevin (Justin Hartley) assures Jack that he is unconcerned since the explosion was broadcast on television and hence was not genuine. Kevin and Kate learn later that night, after bedtime, that their parents will also die one day.

This Is Us Season 6 Episode 1 Recap in Present Day

Kevin and Madison

Kevin has moved in with Madison to share parenting duties with Nick and Franny, the twins. Madison is spending a lot of time with Elijah, a guy from her book club who shares her passion for books, unlike Kevin, who believes that seeing the subtitled film “Parasite” counts as reading. “People thought I was insane because I was living in your garage simply to be near the twins,” he says. “It’s possible they were on to something.” He departs in order to be with Kate.

Toby and Kate

Kate is embarking on a new adventure. Toby (Chris Sullivan) is noticeably absent because he is working three days a week in San Francisco for his new job. Toby will, of course, miss Kate’s 41st birthday celebrations. Toby phones from his new job to wish Kate a happy birthday. He’s arranged for Rebecca and Miguel (and Nicky) to look after the kids while Kate gets a massage from “a woman with offensive lineman’s hands.”

Kate then learns from the massage therapist that Toby is an extremely thoughtful person. But Kate, who is still getting used to their new long-distance relationship, adds that he’s more of a “big in-person, grand gesture kind of man,” adding, “This outsourcing is a little new.” Kate’s boss, Phillip (nicknamed “Phillip Mean Jerk”), texts her to tell her to come in since there is a “small emergency” at school.

When Kate arrives at school, she finds Phillip acrimoniously splitting up with Jessica, telling her, “You bore me,” and that spending time with her is like “watching paint dry.” Kate discovers that the “emergency” is actually a nice birthday surprise: the students have arranged to serenade her with a beautiful performance of “Time After Time” after witnessing that embarrassing moment. Toby eventually comes through, travelling home to see Kate.

Randall and Beth

The Philadelphia Police Department informs Randall that the perpetrator in his home robbery has been apprehended and will be arraigned that afternoon. All of the family’s jewellery was pawned, but one of Randall and Beth’s wedding photos was kept. When Randall arrives in court to meet the man, he discovers that he is addicted to drugs and resolves to bail him out and find him a shelter bed. “I see thousands of addicts in my district who I was elected to help who I’m not doing nearly enough for,” says the city councilman to Beth.

In other news, Kevin has been offered a role in the reboot of “The Manny” (it was only a matter of time). He’s not reprising his role as the titular manny from the original — he’s “far too old” — but he is reprising his role as the show’s father. He accepts so that he may stay in LA and be near his children.
