The episode opens with baby Beth and her father, Abe (Carl Lumbly), dancing together in the sun. Beth began dancing before she could walk, and Abe refers to her as his “little island girl.” He also claims that his daughter accomplishes everything on her own time, which he is absolutely correct about. Beth’s debut performance with her new dancers. Rebecca brings the kids to Matt, and the long-held secret is finally revealed. Beth’s class has over 200 applicants for the 15 spaces available, and she’s having difficulties reducing the field down to a manageable amount. He reassures Beth again, advising her to trust her intuition. After she’s made her decision, she gets a pep talk about how they all belong in this area. One of the students, Stacy, is putting in a lot of effort to prepare for the forthcoming fall showcase, which could lead to an apprenticeship for the attendees. Because her father once labeled her as “one of a kind,” Beth is confident in her abilities. When Beth notices Stacy is late to the gym, she offers to help her. Because Beth is assisting Stacy, Stacy is perplexed as to why Beth is doing so. When Beth learns that her father wants her to be a lawyer, she says that his mother wishes she had followed in Stacy’s footsteps and become an educator.
