At the start of the episode, Negan orders Ginny to return to the Bricks with Perlie. However, Ginny desperately tries to communicate Maggie’s treachery to her guardian. The next morning, Negan contemplates what Ginny might have been trying to reveal and becomes suspicious of Maggie’s intentions. Maggie and Negan work together to track down the Croat (Željko Ivanek), who kidnapped Hershel, Maggie’s son. La Dama, a powerful figure in the post-apocalyptic world, is a fan of Negan’s and is pleased to see him. However, she worries that he has gone soft after showing compassion towards Hershel, Maggie’s son. She tasks Negan with being as dreadful as he used to be, as she needs him to unite Manhattan and protect it from its enemies. To ensure Negan’s cooperation, she reveals that she has a piece of Hershel—a toe—that was cut off during the Croat’s torture. She threatens to inflict more harm if Negan doesn’t comply with her orders.
The season ends with Maggie and Negan’s faces merging, signifying a complex and uncertain future ahead.
