On the eve of her first lead surgery, Dr. Morgan Reznick (Fiona Gubelmann) tells Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff) something that no one else at the hospital knows: She’s been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. This affects the joints in her hand, which have been giving her some pain. Reznick wants a cortisone shot to get her through the day so she can get her first surgery done, but Glassman resists — until Reznick is able to convince him that all she wants is a chance to prove herself.
After a day of disagreeing with each other over surgical procedures for a young cancer patient, Dr. Audrey Lim (Christina Chang) and Dr. Neil Melendez (Nicholas Gonzalez) were able to find a plan that worked for each of them, as well as the patient. But after some soul-searching, Audrey says she can’t give Neil the unconditional support of a partner and the objectivity of a chief — and she won’t give up on her dream.
Carly (Jasika Nicole) and Shaun (Freddie Highmore) practice exposure therapy to ease Shaun’s anxiety over their intimacy — but Shaun quits halfway through and says he can’t do it. Then Carly kicks him out after accusing him of giving up on progressing their relationship.
