Jagged Mind [2023] Movie Story

Billie, a young woman who lives and works in Miami and is featured in the film “Jagged Mind,” is employed in an art gallery. Due to her mother’s prior experience with the condition, she starts to experience memory loss and confides in her friend Kim about her worries. After waking up one night with no recollection of the previous activities, Billie goes to a pub where she experiences a deja vu experience and meets a woman named Alex. After their separation, she goes to an art show organized by her ex-girlfriend Christine and hooks up with her there.

Deja vu strikes again, and Billie finds herself back at the pub where the woman she had been flirting with before introduces herself as Alex. When Billie asks Alex to go with her to the art exhibit, their relationship blossoms. When Billie confides in Alex about her memory loss, Alex shares details about her own previous engagement and her dedication to the two of them. Billie, on the other hand, experiences regular blackouts and glimpses of Alex acting abnormally, leading her to believe that Alex is concealing her actual nature. By disseminating misinformation, Alex also stokes tension between Billie and her friend Kim (Kate Szekely).

Billie learns that Alex is to blame for her blackouts as her condition deteriorates. Billie has been caught in a poisonous relationship because of Alex’s use of a special crystal that is powered by her blood to induce a time loop. A video left by Rose, an artist who dated Alex, reveals the truth to Billie. According to Rose, she utilized the crystal to keep her relationship with Alex intact, but after Alex found out about it, he started using it to manipulate Billie.

Billie resolves to rewind time before seeing Alex, as advised by Rose (Shein Mompremier), and gives the crystal back to Papa Juste (Jimmy Jean-Louis), who runs a shop selling artifacts. Billie regains the memories Alex had obliterated through this process. She remembers that she and Alex used to be happy together, but that their relationship ended because of Alex’s unpredictable behavior. In an effort to make their relationship better by addressing her shortcomings, Alex used the crystal to restart it several times.

In the last minutes, Alex confesses to killing Billie several times and changing the course of events. However, Billie takes charge of the situation now that she is aware of the crystal’s power. Alex is drawn in by her act of weakness, and after she assaults Alex with a shattered wine glass and kills her, she escapes the time loop. The metaphor of the time loop for Alex’s deceptive and harmful behaviors is made clear.

After that, Billie resets the timeline by using the crystal’s abilities and Alex’s blood to transport herself and other people to a time before Alex entered their lives. Christine and Rose, who Alex previously killed, are now spared thanks to this deed. Billie eventually goes to Rose’s art show, rejects Christine’s advances, and gives Papa Juste the wooden box containing the crystal. She does not give the crystal to anybody else, presumably so that she can use its abilities to forge the ideal union for herself. As Billie attempts to reclaim control after feeling weak and powerless in her prior relationships, the closing scene alludes to the recurring cycle of abuse and power imbalances in toxic relationships.
