How Did Stan Waterman Lose His Eye?
Stan Waterman is best known for his stunning underwater photography and videography. His movies have received five Emmys; Discovery Channel even created a documentary called “The Man Who Loves Sharks.” Interestingly enough, just months after his final dive at 90 in the Cayman Islands, he reached 100 years of age!
Stan is known for wearing an eye patch as one of his signature features, making him instantly recognizable to everyone around him. But why did this occur?
Sorry to break this news to you, but unfortunately, we have been unable to learn much about Stan’s eye injuries. According to Freshers Live, his injury occurred following a diving accident; however, we have been unable to verify this claim.
Although we didn’t capture the part of his 2011 conversation with Talking Scuba host Bob Shoemakers where Stan discussed his eye injury, he did address his eye patch. According to Stan, his daughter paints him a new eye patch every Christmas; on one such patch, she painted “a pair of hooters which sort of represents eyes staring back at each other,” as explained by Stan. Unfortunately, he doesn’t wear that out much in public!
Stan lost an eye while scuba diving; we can only speculate about its cause and source; it seems likely. While we would rather believe that something such as a shark, stingray, or both were involved, perhaps Stan could have accidentally poked himself or simply chose not to reveal the truth because mystery appeals more.
Discovery Channel will kick off Shark Week starting July 23.
