In the gripping world of The Last of Us, where survival comes at a cost, not every loss is obvious. Season 2 of the HBO show just came out and goes into more depth about the characters and their choices. One of the most interesting revelations is that Joel killed Eugene, a character who had only been mentioned briefly in season 1. But who exactly was Eugene, and what prompted Joel (Pedro Pascal) to take such drastic action? This is all the information you need.
Who Is Eugene in The Last of Us?
In the video game adaptation, Eugene is not a character we see directly in The Last of Us Part II. Instead, his presence is mostly felt through the reactions and stories of other characters. Eugene is married to Gail, the therapist in Jackson who, in the second season of the HBO show, carries a deep resentment towards Joel after the brutal killing of her husband.
Played by Joe Pantoliano in the show, Eugene is revealed to be a member of the Fireflies, the group dedicated to finding a cure for the Cordyceps virus that has ravaged the world. Eugene’s character plays a significant part in expanding the storyline from the game, adding depth to the narrative of what happens when survival conflicts with morality.
Why Did Joel Kill Eugene?
The game doesn’t say much about what happened to Eugene, but the series does a different thing by going into detail about why he died. Eugene got bitten by an infectious person. In a world where the Cordyceps virus spreads through bites and turns people into dangerous infected creatures, Joel had to make a terrible choice: he could either let Eugene turn into a threat to everyone or kill him to stop the infection from spreading.
Even though Joel has to kill Eugene in order to stay alive, his choice is not simple. Eugene was more than just a survivor; he was married to Gail, a well-known figure in the Jackson community, and a part of the fight against the infection. Not only did Joel kill him to protect the people around him, but it would also haunt him, as we see in his therapy session with Gail. Gail’s anger and resentment are clear as she confronts Joel. She makes it clear that she understands Joel’s reasons, but she still can’t forgive the way he killed Eugene.
The fact that Joel chose to kill Eugene shows how harsh life really is in a world where choices are rarely black and white. It shows how the need to stay alive can often cause problems that can’t be fixed, putting selfishness and morality second to the main goal of staying alive.
Gail’s Grudge Against Joel
Gail, played by Catherine O’Hara, is a very important character in this part of the story. As Jackson’s therapist, it’s her job to help Joel deal with his own problems. But it’s hard to ignore the fact that she has a problem with Joel. When she talks to Joel about Eugene’s death, she’s not just a therapist; she’s also a grieving wife who can’t forgive him, even though she knows why he did what he did.
Her statement, “You killed Eugene. And I resent you for it,” speaks volumes about the emotional weight carried by those living in this post-apocalyptic world. Gail may have a duty at work to help Joel, but her personal feelings make it harder for her to give him the help he needs. In extreme situations, where personal losses and the difficulty of forgiving can make healing even harder, it’s an interesting look at how people think and feel.
Who Plays Eugene?
Eugene has not yet appeared on screen in The Last of Us, but his character will be introduced in a flashback later in the series. Joseph Peter Pantoliano, known for his extensive career across television, film, and theater, will bring the character of Eugene to life in the upcoming series Mary & George. Although Eugene has not yet appeared on-screen, viewers will eventually meet him through a flashback. Joe Pantoliano, a seasoned actor with over 150 roles to his name, is well-recognized for his portrayal of Ralph “Ralphie” Cifaretto in The Sopranos, which earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Pantoliano is also well-known for his part as Cypher in The Matrix (1999) and for other well-known roles in movies like Midnight Run, Bad Boys, Memento and The Fugitive.
For more than 30 years, Pantoliano has been an actor, and he has played both comedic and serious roles. As the bad guy Francis Fratelli in The Goonies (1985) and the memorable Eddie Moscone in Midnight Run (1988) he has shown that he is a versatile character actor. His role as Ralph Cifaretto in The Sopranos is still one of his best, and it cemented his place in television history.
In addition to his acting career, Pantoliano has become an advocate for mental health. . He has been open about his own depression and has worked to get rid of the shame that surrounds mental illness. Pantoliano started the non-profit organization No Kidding, Me Too! to help people with mental health problems and bring attention to the problem.
Fans of Pantoliano’s work will probably enjoy his upcoming part in the historical drama Mary & George, where he will play a key character. Pantoliano’s performance as Eugene is sure to be one of the best parts of the show—given his long and successful career and commitment to mental health advocacy.
In The Last of Us, survival often comes at a high cost. Joel’s decision to kill Eugene is a prime example of the tough choices characters must make in a world dominated by the Cordyceps virus. While it’s easy to see Joel’s action as an act of mercy, it also carries a deep sense of guilt and loss.
More of the emotional effects of this choice on Joel, Ellie, and the people around them will probably be shown as the show goes on. Jackson’s stress, secrets, and unresolved anger will almost certainly lead to more fighting. Eugene’s killing shows how survival in this harsh world can make it hard to tell what is right and wrong. As the story goes on, we’ll find out if Joel can ever truly accept the choices he made in the past and how those choices will affect his relationship with Ellie in the future.
