Magic Johnson is a legend of the Los Angeles Lakers, but the NBA All-Star isn’t excited about HBO’s impending series about his former team. Johnson was recently asked by a TMZ reporter if he was looking forward to Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, an HBO scripted drama due to broadcast in March. When it came to his response, the highly-respected point guard didn’t mince words.

“No, various shows are coming out,” Johnson explained. “I’ve got one, and Jeanie Buss has one on the way.” Those are the ones I’m excited about.”

When a TMZ reporter inquired about Johnson’s approval for the HBO series, the 10-time NBA champion answered, “Well, as I said, I’m not looking forward to it.” “I’m going to end it there.” When asked if he planned to watch, Johnson said flatly, “No.”

“Winning Time: The Rise Of The Lakers Dynasty,” starring John C. Reilly, Sally Field, and Jason Segel, is a much-anticipated new drama series about the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers’ professional and personal life.

Winning Time, directed by Adam McKay and produced by Max Borenstein and Jim Hecht, centers on the Lakers’ successful “Showtime” heyday in the 1980s. Quincy Isaiah (Moonbase 8) plays Magic Johnson, while John C. Reilly (Moonbase 8) plays former Lakers owner Jerry Buss in the series.

Johnson is currently working on his own Lakers project for Hulu, as previously stated. The nine-part docu-series, directed by Antoine Fuqua and executive produced by Jeanie Buss, will feature interviews with coaches and players while highlighting the Lakers’ many eras.

In Netflix and Mindy Kaling’s comedy inspired by the front office of a basketball team, the NBA meets ‘The Office.’ Jeanie Buss is also collaborating with writer Elaine Ko and executive producer Mindy Kaling on a Lakers-inspired workplace comedy series for Netflix.

The series follows Eliza Reed, a fictional team governor, as she navigates NBA ownership and family strife with the help of her best friend. A ten-episode season has been ordered by Netflix.HBO’s Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty premieres in March 2022.
