The movie adaptation of “WICKED” has a new release date.
A new date has been set for the release of Universal Pictures‘ long-awaited movie version of the Broadway hit “WICKED.” It has been changed so that the movie will open in theaters on November 22, five days earlier than planned. This smart move moves the release date away from November 27.
WICKED FILM RELEASE DATE SHIFTED TO AVOID MOANA 2
Moving up the release date helps Universal escape a tough battle at the box office with “Moana 2.” Instead, “WICKED” will be able to make money off of the Thanksgiving holiday crowd, though it will have to deal with a different kind of competition. It will come out on the same day as “Gladiator II,” a historical blockbuster from Paramount and Ridley Scott. This is done so that the two movies’ audiences don’t have to compete with each other.
Multiple Changes to the Release Date
This is the second big change that has been made to “WICKED: Part One.” At first, the movie was supposed to come out on December 25. So Universal changed it to Thanksgiving instead of Christmas, when there are a lot of big movies like Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.” The Thanksgiving time spot was picked so that it would reach the most people during a major holiday without directly competing with these big releases.
