The first episode of Season 2 of “Will Trent“ stars Ramón Rodríguez as the dyslexic GBI agent Will Trent, who looks into a string of car bombs. Based on the books by Karin Slaughter, the episode introduces Susan Kelechi Watson as Cricket Dawson, a Bomb Squad tech who becomes interested in Will. The story picks up six months after APD Detective Angie Polaski, who used to date Will and was played by Erika Christensen, was attacked by a serial killer (Greg Germann), who may or may not be Will’s real father. Angie is taking a long time to get better, but she knows that Will, with whom she has a terrible foster care history, will always be there for her.
Will Trent Season 2 Episode 1 Recap
At the beginning of the episode, Will is still shocked by the news that his mother has died. To feel closer to his mother, he is seen learning Spanish, the language she spoke, to deal with his feelings. He is alone for a while, but then he is called in to lead a probe into a car bombing.
At the beginning of the show, Keith Wakefield’s morning seems normal, but he tragically dies when a bomb goes off in his car. At the same time, Will Trent goes to Spanish class and talks about how he learned about his Puerto Rican background, including the sad story of how his mother was killed. His quiet morning is broken by a call from Amanda Wagner, his boss. She tells him about the bombing and tells him how to get to the scene of the crime.
Will starts to put together clues right away that lead him to suspect Arthur Highsmith. Highsmith is having money problems and has been paying extortion money to keep his son Miles safe in jail. When another bomb goes off and targets Arthur, the investigation takes a dangerous turn. Will and his team barely make it out alive, though.
As the investigation goes on, Will has to face his past and his bond with Angie, who is still healing from injuries she got in a previous case. Their exchanges show how complicated their relationship is. For example, Angie pushes Will to face how he feels about Amanda and the murder of his mother.
As the probe goes on, Will and his team find a dangerous gang involved in a network of prison violence and extortion. They start to figure out what happened with the bombings and the bribery racket with the help of Emily Chu, a woman from a support group for families of people who are in prison.
At an impound lot, there is a tense situation where Will and his team are racing against time to defuse a bomb. Cricket Dawson, an expert in the bomb squad, gives her life to save others, including Barney’s cats. Will and his team are still in shock over the loss.
Will’s partner, Michael, is also having his problems because he thinks his wife is having an affair. As Michael tries to figure out what’s going on with his doubts, he has to face the truth about his family relationships, which leads to a painful conversation with his son Max.
In the end, Will has to make a tough choice when he meets his real father, James Ulster, who turns out to be the one who planned the bombing. When Will faces the person who killed his mother, he has to face his past and make a decision that will change his life forever.
