WILL TRENT SEASON 3 EPISODE 11 RECAP: “BEST OF YOUR RECOLLECTION”

Will Trent Season 3, Episode 11 Recap: The new episode of Will Trent starts with a tense and heartbreaking scene that changes Will’s (Ramón Rodríguez) whole life. What starts out as a normal search for a parolee turns into a tragedy that will stay with him forever. Another person died because of a split-second decision and a bullet that went the wrong way. Now, Will is at the center of an investigation that could change his future. As the episode goes on, Will has a hard time putting together the truth while people around him want things to end quickly.

A CHASE TURNED DEADLY

The episode begins with an intense foot chase through an apartment complex. Will and his partner, Faith Mitchell (Iantha Richardson), are in pursuit of Paco (Marsuvio Sanchez) a man tied to a parole violation. As Paco runs down the stairs, he knocks over a trash can, causing Will to stumble, giving Paco an advantage. Faith attempts to cut him off through another route, while Will continues his pursuit.

Paco finds himself cornered at an apartment door, gun in hand. Shots ring out. Will fires twice hitting Paco in the shoulder. As he moves to secure the suspect, a neighboring door swings open, revealing a teenage boy, Marco. Will has the terrible realization that one of his bullets hit Marco in the chest after going off the wall. He runs to the boy in fear and tries to stop the bleeding. Will holds Marco as he dies on the way to the hospital.

Will is found not to have done anything wrong by an internal investigation, but the psychological damage is done right away. He is scared and haunted by the fact that one innocent life was lost because of what he did, whether it was right or wrong.

UNDER INVESTIGATION

Will finds himself in an interrogation room, sitting across from Captain Heller (Todd Allen Durkin), his hands and sleeves still covered in blood. Heller asks for his weapon, removing the ammunition for inspection. The captain hands Will a Miranda Waiver to sign, but Will’s dyslexia prevents him from reading it clearly. Though he knows what it says, the shock and weight of the situation make it difficult to process.

Heller warns Will that the Atlanta Mayor is eager to close this case. He strongly advises Will to get a lawyer, but Will refuses. His refusal doesn’t sit well with his colleagues, including Angie Polaski (Erika Christensen), who urges him to reconsider. She knows firsthand how dangerous it is to go into an investigation without legal protection. Just as she makes her case, Will’s girlfriend, attorney Marion Alba (Gina Rodriguez), enters the room. She announces that she is recusing herself from the case but will offer advice as a friend. Will remains reluctant, but she warns him that Odessa Shaw (Kecia Lewis), the lead investigator for officer-involved shootings, is relentless and will leave no stone unturned. If Will wants to survive this, he needs to be prepared.

PIECES OF THE PAST

Marion presses Will for every detail from the past 24 hours. Flashbacks show him attempting to cook a meal with Marion before heading to Detective Michael Ormewood’s (Jake McLaughlin) house for game night. While playing Pictionary with Faith and Marion, a call interrupts them. Faith’s son, Jeremy, has been trying to reach Will, causing immediate tension. When Faith realizes her son has been talking to Will but ignoring her, a heated confrontation ensues.

Outside in the backyard, Will confesses to Faith that Jeremy is acting as a confidential informant (CI). Faith is furious, feeling betrayed. But before the conversation can continue, they are called to respond to the case involving Paco.

Now, back in the present, Will is hesitant to share these details with Marion. But she warns him: Odessa will question Faith separately, and if their stories don’t align, he will look guilty.

FAITH UNDER PRESSURE

Meanwhile, Faith is being interrogated by Odessa Shaw, who probes into every small detail, including Faith’s health. Odessa questions whether Faith’s diabetes could have impaired her judgment that morning. Faith insists the assignment was standard: locating Francisco Ortiz, a man who missed a probation hearing. She states that Will’s actions were ordinary, though she knows that isn’t entirely true.

Flashbacks reveal an argument between Faith and Will before the chase began. Faith was planning to request a new partner. This disagreement was still unresolved when they pursued Paco.

Odessa presses Faith about why she separated from Will. Captain Heller steps in, reminding them that protocol allows deviations in high-risk situations. Faith stands by her decision. However, when asked if she saw Paco with a gun, she hesitates before saying, “No. But if Will Trent says there was a gun, then there was a gun.”

DOUBT SETS IN

Marion questions Will about the number of shots fired. He is adamant that Paco shot at him before he returned fire. But as he tries to recall the scene, something shifts in his memory. He remembers a woman in a red scarf slamming her apartment door just before the gunfire. Could the sound of the door have been mistaken for a gunshot?

He asks Marion, “Did they find a gun at the scene?” Her silence is the answer he dreads. There was no weapon.

A CRUCIAL LEAD

Angie and Ormewood visit the apartment complex, searching for additional witnesses. Angie spots a woman with a red scarf peeking out from her apartment. Could she have seen what really happened? If Paco didn’t fire a gun, what does this mean for Will?

The episode ends on a gripping note, leaving Will to face the possibility that his perception of the events was flawed. The question remains: If Paco never fired a shot, then what really happened?

Following the episode, Will Trent showrunner and writer Rebecca Murga shared insights into crafting this intense storyline. In an exclusive interview to tvlinve, Murga revealed that the goal was to push Will to his emotional and psychological limits. “This is the kind of case that changes an agent,” she explained. “We wanted to explore how a split-second decision can lead to devastating consequences and how someone like Will, who is already struggling with trauma, copes with it.”

Ramón Rodríguez, who portrays Will, also opened up about the heavy material in the episode. “This was one of the most challenging scripts I’ve worked on,” he admitted. “There’s a real weight to Will’s guilt, and I wanted to make sure that came across authentically.”

As the season continues, fans are left wondering how Will Trent will move forward from this tragedy. Can he trust his own recollection? And more importantly, will the truth ever come to light?
