“How The Story Ends,” the second-to-last episode of YELLOWJACKETS SEASON 3, has another shocking turn that makes viewers wonder what will happen to several important characters. IS MELISSA ALIVE OR DEAD?
Right from the start, the episode is tense because Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) is becoming more aggressive and bossy with the group. The groups become more distinct as they worry more about food, staying alive, and who really has power in their wilderness camp. Melissa is one of the people Shauna starts to target because she thinks they are dangerous.
This episode shows a big change in Melissa’s position in the group. She can be seen laughing with Hannah early on, which makes Shauna mad. Melissa doesn’t back down when she’s questioned. In a scary and dramatic moment, Shauna calls her “nothing” in front of everyone else. But what really shocks me is when Melissa tries to leave and Shauna shoots her. The bullet barely misses Melissa’s jacket, but it’s dramatic enough to make an impression. Melissa accidentally wets herself out of fear, which is a humiliating moment that turns things around.
Nat (Sophie Thatcher) and Gen’s (Mya Lowe) group is coming up with a way to help Hannah and Kodi get away, which makes things more tense. But Hannah makes a shocking choice: she suddenly sides with Shauna and stabs Kodi in the eye. This cruel betrayal proves that Hannah has fully adopted the group’s darker beliefs. Melissa knows she’s no longer safe with them as the chaos gets worse. She tries very hard to get away.
Melissa has a brave but risky plan to get away. She gets away from the camp and finds a car that has almost no gas left. She speeds off into the night because she feels like she may finally be free. Van (Liv Hewson), Tai (Jasmin Savoy Brown), and Misty (Samantha Hanratty), on the other hand, are ready for her move. They find her and follow the road to a certain spot marked with a “X.” It’s an easy way out. Tai stops Melissa before she can go any further and tackles her to the ground.
Melanie is tied up and put in front of the fireplace when they get back to their makeshift home. It’s very quiet as she listens to the fire crackling, and her mind is already working fast to find a way out. She won’t give up and won’t beg for her life. She instead makes fun of Shauna and the others, making it clear that she doesn’t feel bad about trying to get away.

As a last-ditch effort, Melissa turns off the fireplace’s flue while Tai and Shauna are in the room. This pollutes the air. As the two women pass out, Melissa slowly makes her way back to freedom. When Van goes outside to get some fresh air. he saves Tai by bringing her back to life just in time. When Van gets stronger again, he rushes back in and frees Melissa.
This is the worst part of the power struggle. Van tells Melissa she has cancer and sees this as a test from the Wilderness. She thinks about killing Melissa as a way to make a sacrifice. Melissa doesn’t agree with Van and says that killing someone won’t change anything. The pause is tense, and then Van doesn’t say anything.
Melissa grabs Van’s knife and drives it straight into her chest when she sees her chance. The moment is harsh, shocking, and clear-cut. Van falls down and blood starts to pool around her. Melissa is out of breath as she watches Van struggle to breathe. In her last moments, Van seems to accept her death, as if she knew what would happen.
In contrast, Melissa is shocked. She might have made it through this fight, but at what cost? The others will never forget how she killed Van. At the end of the episode, Tai finds Van’s dead body and loses her temper. Melissa stands still, not knowing what to do next.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE YELLOWJACK
As Episode 9 ends, Melissa is still alive, but she doesn’t know what will happen next. She did something that can’t be taken back and now someone is likely to go after her. Already tense, Van’s death will have long-lasting effects on the people who are still alive. There are more questions than answers in this episode. Will Melissa be able to get away for good? It’s possible that she just executed herself.
With only one episode left in the season, it’s never been less clear what will happen to the Yellowjackets. As the group’s size decreases, the fight to stay alive gets tougher. It’s clear that the wilderness still needs sacrifice.
