Yellowstone Season 4 Episode 9 Recap

John invites Carter out to teach him to ride, but Carter is reluctant. They bond over the history of buffalo in the Yellowstone area. When John returns home, Beth lashes out at him for his careless actions. John informs Beth that a man named Riggins is behind the attack and that she should quit blaming her brother. Jamie watches the television coverage of the previous episode’s tragic attack and John’s speech announcing his run for Governor. Christina switches gears and advises Jamie to ditch Garrett. A life sentence for opposing the airport, Summer phones John from prison asking for his help. Summer is meeting with her lawyer and they’re trying to frame her. Summer explains that this protest was Beth’s idea, which surprises John. He promises to get Summer out of jail.

Chief Rainwater tells Kayce about the wolf she keeps seeing and what it symbolizes to his people. The Chief and Mo encourage him to talk to the wolf to understand the animal’s purpose in being there. John meets Garrett in Ruby’s Café at a diner on his way home from prison. They trade a few comments, each blaming the other for Garrett’s situation, and John storms out without eating. Jimmy and Emily share a bed at the 6666 Ranch after a long courtship. Jimmy says Mia has always been interested in Jimmy’s future, whereas Emily likes him for who he is now. After Jimmy prepares a horse for a rodeo, he observes competitors, including Travis. He informs Jimmy they’re returning to Yellowstone after cowboy school.

Back in Yellowstone’s main home, John and Beth prepare to fight while Rip and Carter flee. John accuses Beth of using Summer, putting her in jail. Beth says she’ll hurt anyone to defend her family. When John tells her to be moral, Beth says a kingdom has no morals. John tells her they don’t slaughter sheep, only wolves. Jimmy returns to Emily to inform her of his impending departure. Jimmy promised John he’d return to Yellowstone. Jimmy asks Emily to wait for him as the two try to emotionally split.  When Beth enters, she persuades Walker to play her a sorrowful tune to match her mood after talking to her father. Rip watches from afar as she tears, knowing she’s lost the family she’s fought for her whole life. Kayce prepares for a spiritual journey with Mo and Chief Rainwater to discover his life’s purpose and possibly talk to his spirit animal. He aims to fast for four days and nights, offering prayers alone in the bush to communicate with the animal. As the credits roll, his buddies leave him to face this self-imposed test alone.
