But as the second half of Yellowstone’s fifth and final season starts, fans are hit with the terrible truth: something unimaginable has happened. John Dutton is dead.
YELLOWSTONE SEASON 5 PART B: IS JOHN DUTTON DEAD?
Yes, it’s true—John Dutton has died. In the most recent episode, Yellowstone deals with Kevin Costner’s absence in a shocking way. When Beth (Kelly Reilly) gets to her dad’s house at the beginning of the episode, she is scared to see police cars and ambulances. She quickly gets out of her car and asks what’s going on. Her voice shakes as she asks, “That’s my dad. What happened? Is this a crime scene?” She quickly calls her brother Kayce (Luke Grimes), who shows up soon after. As they prepare for the worst, they are led inside, where they find John’s dead body lying on the floor in a pool of blood. The fact that Costner’s face isn’t shown makes it clear: he’s no longer on the show.
Beth is devastated and angry right away, and she puts the blame on her brother Jamie (Wes Bentley), with whom she has a nasty argument. Their family rivalry has reached a dangerous level because of Jamie’s recent power plays and his new relationship with lawyer Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri). However, Kayce is not as quick to believe what is happening. She says that Jamie would not kill their father. This fight between Beth and Kayce shows a split in the family, which makes things even more tense.
After John’s death, Jamie, who is the Attorney General of Montana, has to tell everyone what happened. He breaks down in tears as he makes the official announcement that John killed himself. Beth and Kayce are shocked by this news and refuse to believe that their father would ever kill himself. As they drive back to the Yellowstone ranch, they can’t stop thinking of questions. Beth’s doubts about Jamie grow even stronger.
The episode then flashes back to six weeks earlier to show the dark plot behind John’s death. Inside a secret meeting, Sarah talks with a hired killer about how to kill John. She suggests that they fake the death to make it look like it was a suicide so that no one would suspect anything. Even though Jamie is involved in the plot, he doesn’t seem at all at ease with how bad things really are. After that, he is seen crying alone in his room because he feels guilty and regretful. However, Sarah’s happy smile as she walks into the room ready to toast their success only makes Jamie’s problems worse.
In the present, Beth’s need for answers and revenge takes over her life. She calls her husband Rip (Cole Hauser), who is in Texas, and says, “They killed him.” She is so upset that she can hardly speak. “Daddy.” Now that Rip is back with her, Beth is even more determined, which could lead to a fight with Jamie and Sarah.
YELLOWSTONE SEASON 5 PART B: IS JOHN DUTTON REALLY DEAD?
Fans are very curious about whether Yellowstone’s John Dutton is really dead, especially since the scene where he was supposedly killed leaves a lot to the imagination. In the first scene of Season 5 Part B, an older man’s bloody body is seen in the governor’s mansion in Montana, but Kevin Costner’s face is not visible. Because we can’t see John’s face clearly, some people think that the show might be misleading them. Could this be a mistake by the show, or is John’s fate really as certain as it seems? The mystery is made even more complicated by Jamie’s mysterious phone call and quick public announcement that John had killed himself. Fans are wondering if this scene is the end for John Dutton or if there is still more to the story. This is especially true since Yellowstone has always been about suspense and twists that come out of nowhere with its main characters.
